Four Things To Expect From Junior High Homeschool Academics

by Kristen White Blogger
Building the right foundation is important so parents need to carefully review and evaluate their child’s junior high curriculum through the online homeschool program. Seventh grade is generally the first time a student can take specific classes that are actually 8th grade work and so they can work ahead and challenge themselves. Parents need to confirm the program offers an advanced and find out the requirements for their child being approved to enroll in these courses. Students will need to maintain a certain GPA or grade in each of the classes to remain in the course and be eligible to continue on this advanced path in the next grade.

Junior high is also where students may start to take elective classes to broaden their knowledge and satisfy credits for graduation. It is necessary to confirm that the program provides a range of elective options for students to choose an area that is in their interest and can help build skills and knowledge for what they want to do in the future. The 7th grade homeschool curriculum online will include a list of the required subjects, options for taking a higher level in that subject and a list of electives. The guidance counselor is a great resource for determining which classes the student should take to put them on the course that will support their future goals and objectives.

These two grades build on each other to get students ready for high school so it is recommended that teens stick with the same homeschool program for both 7th and 8th grade and then make a transition before starting 9th if that is desired. High school is already a time of transition and so long as students have been exposed to the standard concepts and subjects, they should be able to move to a different program or a traditional school with less hassle and adjustment.

The best 8th grade homeschool curriculum will continue to build on the previous year and is the first opportunity for students to earn high school credits so it is important to ensure they are ready for this level of work. Their grades will be placed on the report card used to build the final transcript which is utilized when applying for admission to colleges and universities. Science, math, English and languages are the general subject areas where Honors classes are placed but parents should check with the homeschool program to determine their unique options and electives.

Choosing the best online curriculum starts with basic research and talking with the program’s staff to answer questions while comparing options. Whether you are just starting out in homeschooling or are continuing from prior years, make sure the program is still the best resource for your student academically. This is a great time of education when elementary is passed, and before they enter the final stretch.  With the right tools, families can enjoy the benefits and challenges at this time.
