Four Simple Appliance Repairs You Can Tackle Yourself

by West Coast Chief Repair Provide Hvac Services

When you start to have a problem with one of your appliances, it can be pretty frustrating. When an appliance starts to act up, you will often start to have a sense of panic about the repair bill you are about to receive. However, there are actually a number of appliance repairs that anyone can handle on their own. To help you out, take a look at these four simple DIY appliance repairs that you can tackle without calling a repairman.

1. You Hear a Scraping Noise Coming from the Dryer

If you hear a scraping noise coming from your dryer, it is usually caused by broken drum glides. Drum glides are little strips of plastic that are found in the front of the dryer’s bulkhead. Replacing them will only take you about 15 minutes. You will need the two replacement drum glides, a putty knife and a screwdriver.

Start by sliding your putty knife up under the top panel of the dryer. This will allow you to access the screws under the panel that hold the front bulkhead in place. Unscrew the bulkhead and remove it to access the drum glides. Now, you simply need to take out the old drum glides and snap the new ones in place. Replace the bulkhead, screw it tight and snap the top panel back in place.

2. Your Refrigerator Will Not Stay Cold

This is one of the most annoying appliance problems you can have. Nobody wants to have warm milk or wilted lettuce in their refrigerator because it can’t stay cool. However, this problem is usually an easy fix. All you need to do is to replace the defrost timer. To tackle this repair, all you need is a new defrost timer and a screwdriver.

The defrost timer will be located either in the control panel found inside the fridge or behind the kick plate that is found in the bottom front side of the fridge. All you need to do is remove the timer by unscrewing it and detaching it from the harness connector. Then, simply connect the new defrost timer to the harness connector and screw it into place.

3. Your Washer Refuses to Fill with Water

This frustrating problem can usually be remedied by replacing the fill valve. You will need a new fill valve, a set of nut drivers and sometimes a flathead screwdriver. Start the repair by turning off the water supply to the washer. Unplug the washer as well.

The next step can be a little different for the many styles of washers on the market. The fill valve will be located on the back of the washer, where it connects to the fill hoses. Some fill valves are connected to a mounting bracket and some are not. They may require various sizes of nut drivers to remove them. However, you should be able to figure out how to remove the faulty fill valve and replace it with a new one fairly easily.

4. Your Stovetop Is Not Getting Hot

If your stovetop is not heating up, you can usually fix it simply by replacing the surface heating element. This is one of the simplest appliance repair jobs you will ever do. You don’t even need any tools. All you need to do is get a replacement surface heating element. You can slide the old heating element out with your bare hands and slide in the new one.
