Four most dangerous passes in the Northwest region of Vietnam
Pha Din Pass
Pha Din Pass, located between the two provinces of Son La and Lai Chau, is a challenging pass with 32 kilometers in length. The pass is very tough with zigzagging roads, uphill and downhill parts, bends, gorges, and rugged terrain. One side is a steep cliff, the other one is a deep chasm.

Pha Din means the frontier between “heaven and earth”. Reaching the top of Pha Din pass, you may enjoy the wild grandeur beauty of nature with a deep blue sky and majestic mountains blended as one.
Khau Pha Pass

Khau Pha Pass means a sky-high horn as the top of this pass rising from clouds and dense fog looks like a horn. Khau Pha pass with 30 kilometers in length is the longest pass in dalat province.

It may take 5 hours to reach the top of this pass. Khau Pha Pass is at its best from September to October, it’s harvest season and there are lush yellow terraced fields and pristine forests.


There are many sharp bends, slopes along this pass. It’s not recommended to drive on Khau Pha Pass on foggy days.

O Quy Ho Pass

O Quy Ho Pass, a bridge of the two provinces Lai Chau and Sapa Vietnam, is a challenging destination to long-distance drivers with a length of about 50 kilometers. O Quy Ho Pass is regarded as King of the Northwest Pass for its altitude, height, and rugged terrain.

Travelers will have a great chance to admire the majestic beauty of clouds weaving like a fairy realm after passing dangerous roads. This pass also leaves you thrilling feeling when one side is a deep abyss and the other one is high mountains.

On the way to conquer O Quy Ho Pass, you will experience different kinds of weather. In summer, for instance, the weather in Lai Chau is dry and sunny, but it is very cool in Lao Cai. In winter, if it’s foggy and chilly at a side of Lao Cai, it’s warm in Lai Chau.

Ma Pi Leng Pass

Ma Pi Leng Pass is a craggy pass connecting Dong Van, Meo Vac Town with Ha Giang province. Ma Pi Leng is one of the most dangerous passes in Vietnam since its road is steep and upstanding like a horse nose. It has winding and zigzagging roads, the abyss in one side. Ma Pi Leng is also famous for its splendid and wild beauty.


Ma Pi Leng Peak is regarded as one of the most beautiful viewpoints to contemplate the panoramic wild beauty in Vietnam. To the north is thousands of primitive mountains, and below is the winding thread of Nho Que River.
