Fleet Management Do’s and Don’ts

by Robert Johnson Blogs on Latest News

Overseeing all the activities for a transportation company, especially if you are a manager, can be daunting. Apart from tracking your fleet of drivers, you are also in charge of fleet servicing. Here are the do's and don't of fleet management.

The Dos

Oversee efficient logistics

The first thing you need to do is to manage efficient processes when it comes to logistics. You need to ensure that your fleet workers have the training and experience to work productively. That way, the drivers can hit its targets and adhere to the company's policies. For example, you want to design a process that allows them to fuel the vehicles efficiently and maintain efficient reporting progress.

Establish excellent communication with your drivers

Right from the time the vehicle leaves the premises, you need to communicate with your driver constantly. By establishing an efficient communication process, you can monitor your drivers' progress just if any potential issues may come in their way.

Establish an efficient maintenance policy

The only way to determine whether a vehicle will not succumb to any potential risks is by establishing an efficient maintenance standard. This not only prepares you for any repair jobs that can be resolved straight away, but it also allows you to meet your fleet's targets.

The Don'ts

Postpone disposing of any old or redundant vehicles

Having an old and unused vehicle can almost be equated to liability for any transportation business. As much as you may want to hold on to them, they might not help you meet your targets. Apart from slowing the driver down significantly, their frequent repairs can drain on your bank balance.

Wait to review your driver's performances

The success of a transportation business heavily relies on the driver's performance. After every trip, a driver makes, take your time to assess their strengths and weaknesses. If there are areas that need improvement, you can devise a clear plan to meet your target. If a driver performs well, you should reward them.
