Fixing the 'Plugged in but Not Charging' Dell Laptop Problem: My Personal Experience

by Shamir D. Digital Marketer

It was just another ordinary evening when I booted up my Dell laptop, compelled by the desire to go online and check my Facebook updates. As usual, I immediately connected to my Wi-Fi and began reading and tweaking updates on the Facebook website. My Dell laptop's battery had shown a red signal after quite some time of going through updates and surfing the web side by side. To check out the Dell Precision 5550 Review, click here

I appeared to understand what I was supposed to do. I immediately plugged my Dell laptop's battery charger into its charging port and a power outlet, then leaned back in my chair to check for updates again. Oh no! I thought. I realized my laptop's battery was not charging for less than 30 seconds. The red light on my computer kept flashing, indicating that I should plug it in or shut it down to save the unsaved work.

I unplugged and then replugged the AC adapter. The backlight illuminated brightly, and the green LED light on the adapter was appropriately illuminated, but the red light persisted. When I clicked the battery icon in the system tray, it said, 'Plugged in, Not Charging.' I haven't had this problem since I got this laptop, so how did it happen today? I was both intrigued and surprised. I unplugged and replugged the charger, but nothing happened. 'I'm in a pickle; it shouldn't have happened to me,' I reasoned.

Let me tell you that it's a relatively new Dell laptop loaded with Microsoft Windows 7 that's only about eight months old. So I should not have been treated this way. The irony was that I didn't even have another computer nearby to work on.

Ith my heartbeat slightly lower, I felt hopeless. I was dissatisfied. I shut down the laptop and then forgot about it until the following evening, even thonot gettingem out of my head. I restarted my computer the next day, hoping it would start working independently. This issue could have been caused by a temporary glitch.

I plugged the AC adapter into the power outlet and my laptop's charging port, but nothing happened. So I immediately turned off the computer, fearing that the remaining battery charge would drain and the computer would not boot again.

I was once again disappointed. But then my eyes glowed with hope once more. 'Because it's a new laptop, I should call Dell and ask for assistance,' I reasoned. A thought crossed my mind before I dialed Dell support. Let's take one last look at the laptop. If it still doesn't charge, I'll call Dell and have it fixed today. I'm unsure what made me think this, but I rebooted my laptop and reconnected the charger. Voila! My laptop's battery usually started charging again, as it had for the previous 7-8 months. The 'Red Alert' on my computer did not appear this time.

This time, my eyes were exceptionally bright. My heartbeat quickened again, and the smile returned to my face. Ah! Finally, my issue has been resolved. I was overjoyed and relieved. But then I got antsy. 'What on earth could have caused this problem?' I wondered.

'What should be done if the problem reoccurs?' Because my laptop was charging correctly, I immediately connected to the Internet and began mining Dell help and various other communities and forums for possible solutions to this problem. To be honest, I did not find any possible causes for the problem. However, I came up with a few different solutions to the problem. So, I will share a few solutions that other users can try.

What you can do if you encounter such a problem with your Dell laptop:

If your Dell laptop is still under warranty, contact Dell support to have your problem resolved. This should be your first choice, especially if you are unfamiliar with computers. You can also take your laptop to a Dell help center and have it repaired there. As you can see from my experience, I did not have the opportunity to contact Dell support. However, this option is certainly available to others.

If your laptop is no longer under warranty, you are aware that you will have to pay Dell technical support to have the problem resolved. If you do not want to pay for help, you can try to solve the problem yourself. You can begin by saying:

Examine the green LED light on the power adapter. If it's turned on, the adapter works correctly and supplies power. So the issue is either with the charging port or the laptop itself.

A faulty charging port cannot be repaired because of hardware issues. If Dell technicians discover a problem with the jack, it will be replaced. You may have to pay for this if the warranty does not cover it.

You can try this before replacing the hardware. First, remove the battery from your laptop by opening the battery panel. Hold down the power button on the computer for 30-40 seconds (a little longer in some cases). After pressing the button, replace the battery in the panel. To begin charging the laptop, close everything and plug in the AC adapter.

I discovered that this method works most of the time for this problem. If the green LED light on the adapter is not lit, try plugging it into a different power outlet. There's a chance that the particular power jack isn't working correctly. However, if the light on the adapter illuminates properly in another power outlet, it means the adapter is operational, and you can charge your laptop.

If the LED light does not illuminate in multiple power outlets, there is a problem with the adapter itself. Again, you have the option of having it replaced.
