Five Tips for Editing Your Manuscript

by Edword Bella Freelance Author
Editing a manuscript is not an easy task as it requires careful assessment of the complete content and the process is tedious and requires a lot of your time. However, a carefully edited manuscript provides a pleasurable reading experience to the targeted audience. So, here are a few tips that you can keep in mind for logically editing the content.

1. Carefully read the manuscript line by line to check for the spellings, the punctuations, the grammatical errors and correct such issues.

2. Take care of the general structure of the content as the writing should have a smooth flow. Ensure that every sentence and every paragraph is articulated with each other and that they are not logically inconsistent. If it is a non fiction write- up, then the paper should have an introduction and a conclusion.

3. Check for conflicting content in the manuscript. For instance, there might be contradictions of facts within the manuscript. Also, there might be instances where the character of your book is doing something which is against the picture that you have built up for the person like a person wearing a beautiful red dress while you have projected that the character hates red colour.

4. Cut down the fat and clean up your writing. While editing, you come across many instances where you have wandered away from the subject matter and went about explaining things which are not required as this might take away the interest of the reader. So while editing your manuscript, make the language crisp and clear.

5. To engage the readers completely, ensure that you use the tone of the content consistently and logically and also avoid using superfluous words.

It is considered better to keep your work aside for some time after completing it and before taking it up for editing as you have worked closely with the book and might not be in a position to find out the mistakes. You can also hire a professional editor for editing your novel or the non fiction write-up. By hiring a professional, you will get an unbiased assessment of your book and the expert editor will also be able to enhance the quality of your book.

Have you opted to hire a professional nonfiction editor to edit your manuscript or did you decide to self edit it? If you have hired an editor, let us know why you opted for it and how your experience was.
