Five Things Every Model Needs to Know

by A.Rrajani Photographer A.Rrajani

The following is part 5 of my series introducing five things every model should do before a shoot. In this article, we continue with how to prepare for a modeling job and how to communicate with the client. When working as a model, there are many things that you will have to learn in order to be successful in your career. One of the most important and perhaps the most overlooked is having good communication skills. If you want to be a good model and you can't get along with the people you are working with, then chances are you won't last long.

Communication is an important aspect of any business. Whether you are dealing with the public or with other models, it is critical to be able to communicate with them and understand what they are looking for. You can't just say "hi" to everyone you meet and expect to make a good living modeling. In order to get the most out of your career and build a reputation for being a model that everyone wants to work with, you need to know how to communicate effectively with your clients.

It's best to make time to communicate with your clients at least once a week. Make sure you always listen to their ideas and take notes during your phone conversations. Make sure that you have plenty of time to call your clients during normal working hours so that you never run out of topics or time to talk to them.

Another important thing that every model needs to do before they go on a shoot is to bring their own portfolio with them to the shoot. There is nothing worse than having a client see your modeling portfolio and not be impressed with your looks! Make sure that your clients know everything about your life and background, including your hobbies, profession, and personal life if possible.

Many people who are trying to become models think that they need to network by attending parties or trying to get job modeling jobs at casting agencies. While these things are important to some people, they are definitely not essential for many models. Many models find that they can make the same amount of money without any outside help. If you don't feel comfortable asking your friends and family for money to help you out with modeling, you can always consider taking up modeling internships. These are great ways for models to learn what it takes to be successful in the business.

When your modeling agency sends you a client, make sure to send them a thank-you letter within 48 hours. Your letter should let them know that you received their resume and that you will evaluate their portfolio and interview them. This gives you a chance to meet the person behind the modeling agency and get a good feel for them before you represent them in an actual audition. Most modeling agencies have representatives who are available to provide help to new model hopefuls. Make sure you ask your potential representation what you can do to ensure that you will be able to contact your new prospects after you've had a chance to observe their portfolio.

If you are working on your own, you will need to decide how you will market yourself to potential modeling agencies. If your experience is limited, you may want to consider attending local functions, charities, and other local events to show your work. Be friendly and approachable, and try to strike up a conversation with any of the locals that come by. Most models have a natural inclination towards networking, and they will be glad to share this with anyone who asks. If you keep at it, you should be able to find a good agency and start meeting with good models.

It is important to remember that there are different types of models in the industry. Some agencies focus on fashion models, while others focus on editorial models and even runway models. You will also want to consider your unique personality when looking for a modeling agency to represent you. If you are serious about your modeling career, it is important to make sure that you choose an agency that focuses on what you want to do. If you have never considered working with a specific agency before, it may seem overwhelming at first, but soon enough you will understand that there are many options available for models in your specific field of interest.
