Five reasons why not to give up meat
In yesterday's big meat discussion, EAT SMARTER presented five reasons to go vegetarian. But even though the number of vegetarians is increasing, most people still eat meat. For good reason? Read in the second part of the discussion: Five reasons why you should not give up meat.
Important nutrients
Meat contains many nutrients. Of course, there are numerous studies that prove that eating too much meat can make you sick. In principle, however, this applies to all foods that are eaten in excess. It is also a fact that moderate meat consumption is quite healthy. Meat contains the valuable minerals iron and zinc. No food covers the body's iron requirements as well as meat. Iron ensures that oxygen is transported to the cells. Meat is also an excellent source of protein and the important vitamin B12 is found exclusively in animal products.
Even the ancestors ate meat
Eating meat is a very natural human habit. The question of whether humans are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores is a perennial topic of debate. Vegetarians like to argue that the anatomy of the human digestive system and the lack of fangs and claws prove that humans are born herbivores. A scientific study argues against this: researchers at the University of Arkansas have found bite marks on animal bones that can be traced back to the genus Homo, an ancestor of modern humans who lived 2.5 million years ago.
A sensual pleasure
Eating meat is a sensual pleasure. It is actually a banal argument - but meat simply tastes and smells good. The inimitable taste and smell of meat is a sensual experience: the smell of a barbecue in summer, a Sunday roast at a family party, a hearty snack with sausage on a mountain tour. These are experiences that no meat eater would want to miss. No other food offers so many flavours and can be prepared in so many different ways.
A satiation
Meat is easy to fry. It has excellent qualities to satisfy a family's hunger quickly and tastily. Thanks to the many nutrients contained in meat, moderate consumption makes healthy eating extremely easy. You don't have to worry about vitamin and mineral intake. And no one needs to take a cooking course to fry a delicious schnitzel or top a sausage roll. Meat in the pan also makes men cook - in the best sense.
If meat, then high-quality
Ethically correct meat consumption is easier today than ever before. For all the positive qualities that meat undoubtedly has, there is also no question that the conditions of industrial factory farming should not be supported. Every meat consumer should be aware of his or her responsibility towards farm animals and act accordingly. Nowadays, it is possible to buy high-quality meat away from industrial mass production without much difficulty. Do not be afraid to pay a visit to the farm where your meat comes from. A good meat producer should have nothing to hide.
