The chair is one of the most unappreciated and taken for granted pieces of furniture.  Everyone has some kind of chair within their home.  Your wooden dining room table chair to the favorite overstuffed easy chair adorn nearly every single room.  There are chairs for relaxing, chairs for medical procedures, chairs for babies, chairs for the very old, chairs for children being scolded, and even chairs for kings.  There is no shortage of history and mystery surrounding some of our favorite places to relax.

The actual chair that we think of today did not become a common household item until the 16th century.  Most people just sat on whatever furniture they had in their homes up until that time.  Everything had to be handmade, and space was truly a commodity.  Chairs  were present in ancient Egypt, and some of the beautifully designed pieces have survived to this day.  In all reality, very few chairs have held up long enough to make their way into museums or private collections.  Unless made for special occasions, many of these chairs were created from inferior materials that simply didn’t last.  In the mid-19th century, chairs could be made in factories, and distributed to a much wider group of consumers.

Chairs have come a long way, and now feature a variety of styles and levels of comfort.  You now have the option of a classic arm chair or you can modernize your space and buy a womb chair . History has also hosted quite a few famous seats.
  1. The Egg Chair
This is an incredibly comfortable chair that offers someone in a public place a more personal feel.  This chair was initially designed by Arne Jacobson for a hotel chain, and the design ultimately took off.  People modified this design in the 1960’s, and the chair really became a staple of the posh mod interior.
  2. The Tulip Chair
Anyone who has spent time in an elementary school office has more than likely also spent time sitting in this chair.  These are the space age looking deep seated smooth chairs that can be found at most schools and convention centers.  First designed by Eero Saarinen in 1956, the modern design fused with economy to make this chair a favorite.
  3. Eames Lounge Chair
This is considered one of the most luxurious contemporary chairs in the world.  It is a two-piece lounge chair that comes with an ottoman that in an extension of the chair itself.  Inspired by the original English smoking chair, this is a piece that mimics a classic work of art.  This chair is known for its comfort, and its exorbitant price.  If you can afford it, this chair is definitely worth it!
  4. The Zero Gravity Chair
This chair was designed to be one of the most comfortable seats in the world.  It is supposed to support the body in such a way as to make the user feel completely weightless.  The zero gravity chair  is promoted as both a suitable chair for the office, and for relaxation within the home.  It appears to be an oversized recliner, and has a reputation for being extremely costly- but a definite once in a lifetime comfort experience.
  5. Wegner Swivel Chair
This chair looks extremely simple, but provides a futuristically ergonomic design.  It has the look of a well-padded stool on wheels, but has an interesting extended wooden back that supports the user’s back at just the right points.  This chair originated for the office in the 1950’s, but the sleek design and interesting look continues to captivate people today.
