Five Fun Ways to Teach Letter Recognition

by Marc T. Romero Business Consultant, Marketing
Alphabets and numbers are very important in education since they are the basis on which all other things are built. If your child gets a strong foundation for alphabets and letters, he or she can learn faster. Letter recognition is one of the primary steps in learning the alphabet. Here are some proven methods to teach letter recognition.

1) Use the learning letters app of Zoolingo

There are several children’s apps that can help your child to learn to identify letters in ways that are fun. Zoolingo’s learning letters app is lively, and children love to play with it. While they play, they also get to learn more. These learning letters app have colorful pictures that will attract children more.

2) Label items your child uses daily

If you are teaching letter recognition at school, it will be great if you can label the desks, classroom door, and anything the child comes into contact with. This will help the children to recognize and practice letters every time. If you are teaching letter recognition at home, you can label your child’s bed, wardrobe, the doors in the house, the garden fence, and any other thing you consider worthy of being labeled.

3) Make books available for children.

You may not want to do this because your child may play and tear the books easily. Do not let that stop you, there are books that have very hardcovers and good binding and children will not be able to tear them easily. You can also print large letters along with colorful pictures for your kid. Once these materials are constantly available for your child, He or she will be attracted by the colors. They will become more familiar with the letters making it easy for them to recognize them when you point them out.

4) Try Letter Games

Kids love to have fun and if you make the learning process fun, they will love to participate in it. One popular game is the “One Letter a Day” game. This game can be played with a group of toddlers or a single child. That means it is both applicable at school and at home. You will choose one letter and read a book that has words that start with that letter. There are books that can help with that. You can also write your little story with words that begin with that letter. After reading out the story out, you will create a chart with the child. You can them make the children match the letter to pictures that begin with that letter.

5) Point out letters that you see daily

When you move with the child and you find letters or even words, you can point out letters you see around so that your child can familiarize himself or herself with it more. For instance, you can point out the “W” that starts the word “washroom” when you take your child to the washroom. Ask the child if he or she can identify the letter without your help.
