Finding the Best Liquid Flow Meter

by Johnson Brad Marketing

A flow meter is a kind of instrument that is useful in measuring mass, linear, volumetric or non-linear flow rate of a particular gas or liquid.  Understanding the needs and specifications of your application is the first step in identifying the right flow meter.  Time should also be invested in conducting a full evaluation of the fluid process and installation.

Key Questions Answered

Before choosing a flow meter, make sure you get some of the key questions answered.  A few things to consider are: whether or not the fluid is clean, the viscosity of the liquid, the rate of measurement required, the kind of fluid that has to be measured, whether an electronic signal output or local display is needed on the flow meter, the maximum and minimum rate of flow for the flow meter, chemical compatibility of the fluid, maximum and minimum process pressure, etc.

Because a number of tangible factors should be considered while selecting water flow meters, it is important to familiarize yourself with your supplier, their personnel and the type of experience they have with maintenance and calibration.

Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting to remember the installation costs is a mistake many people make when deciding to install a water flow meter.  Another common mistake is prioritizing low cost over performance quality.  Purchasing a flow meter because it is inexpensive may result in higher installation and maintenance costs in the future.

Instead of considering the first flow meter you come across, it is important to first find out your needs and then conduct detailed research.  Luckily, many flow meter suppliers have online stores with thorough product descriptions.

Understanding Flow Meters

A liquid flow meter device is useful in measuring the amount of vapor, gas or liquid that passes through it, sometimes in a particular time period.  Important parts of the flow meter include the transmitter, transducer and a primary device. The transmitter does the job of producing a usable signal flow from a raw transducer signal. The transducer performs the job of sensing fluid passing through the primary device.

Flow Meter Types

Besides Ultrasonic flow and Liquid flow meters, there also exist volumetric flow meters which are useful in measuring fluid volume that passes through the flow meter directly. Velocity flow meters are also available which use techniques for measuring velocity of the flowing stream of liquid for determining the volumetric flow. Mass flow meters are also available for measuring mass flow of the flowing liquid stream. As far as inferential flow meters are concerned, they don’t measure mass, velocity or volume but infer the flow measure from other parameters that have been measured.
