Find out how the dental implants work and whether you are a candidate for it or not

by Allen Rose Doctor

Loss of teeth can occur due to trauma in the form of an accident or disease such as periodontal, tooth decay etc. It not only affects the person’s dental health but the overall health. But thanks to cosmetic dentistry, it can help improve the persons smile and appearance. Cosmetic dental procedure such as dental implants can help restore the lost, chipped or broken teeth.

Dental implants and how do they work?

Dental implants are the best restorative option and can be placed permanently in the jaw bone. They replace the natural missing teeth by supporting prosthesis such as crown. Dental implant has three parts; an implant which is fixed into the jawline, an abutment that is fitted over the part of the post that appears on top of the jawline and finally a crown that appears and feel similar to the natural tooth.

The lower part which is the implant is a titanium post that is fused permanently into the jawbone. The crown is made up of a composite resin which matches the tooth color. In some cases, the dentist may use a porcelain tooth but it is not considered as durable that can last a lifetime.

Who should get a dental implant done?

In general, people who have one or more missing natural teeth are a candidate for a dental implant. A person should consider getting an implant if:

A person who wants long term and durable replacement for their missing natural teeth

The person should have healthy gum bone to support an implant

For restoring the facial esthetics by getting your missing teeth replaced

Want to eat and speak without any difficulty

In the case to get rid of the inconvenient and uncomfortable dentures

What are the types of dental implants?

Endosteal implants

These implants are implanted directly into the jawbone through the surgical procedure. Once the healing has been completed on the surrounding tissue, another surgery is required to connect the abutment post to the first implant. The final step is to attach the artificial one or more tooth one by one or as a group such as a bridge or denture to the post.

Subperiosteal implants

These subperiosteal implants are made of metal frame. They are implanted in the jawbone below the gum tissue. The metal frame automatically becomes fixed in the jawbone as the gum tissue heals. The posts that are attached to the metal frame stick out of the gums so that the artificial teeth can be easily mounted on top of it.
