The LED light is one of the most commonly-used forms of lighting today. They are cited for being more durable and offering comparable or better lighting quality than other conventional types of lighting. This article will discuss what makes LED lighting different from other lighting sources as well as a few things you may not have known about LED lighting.

The term LED means light-emitting diode, and this has become one of today’s most energy efficient and rapidly developing light technologies. There are a number of qualities associated with the use of an LED light as compared to the normal conventional bulb. LED lighting is very different from other lighting sources such as incandescent or fluorescent bulbs and the key differences include the following:

  • LEDs are the size of a flick of pepper and a mix of red, green and blue LED is typically used to make white light.

  • LED light emits light in a specific direction as a result this reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. In addition, this feature makes LED lights more efficient for many users such as task lighting. When it comes to other types of lighting the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture. Because of the directional aspect with regards to LED lighting, it is perfect for lighting countertops for cooking and reading recipes.

  • LED lights emit very little heat as compared to incandescent bulbs which release 90% of their energy as heat. As a result LED lights are much cooler than incandescent lights which reduces the risk of burnt fingers

  • LED lights last longer - it has been proven that the same LED string could still be in use 40 holiday seasons from beginning of use.

While there are basic facts that are well-known with regards to LED lighting there are others that are not. Below are some things you did not know about LED lighting:

  • An LED is a type of solid state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. LED bulbs today can be 6 to 7 times more energy-efficient than conventional incandescent bulbs and cut energy use by more than 80%.

  • Good quality LED bulbs can have a useful life of 25000 hours or more which adds up to more than 3 years if the light is run 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

  • LED lights are used for a range of applications because of their unique characteristics including their compact size, ease of maintenance, resistance to breakage and the ability to focus the light in a single direction. Some uses include traffic lights, vehicle brake lights, TVs and display cases.

  • Global sales of led replacement bulbs increased between 2011 and 2012 by 22%.

  • LED lights contain mercury and studies have determined that they have a smaller environmental impact than incandescent bulbs.
