Exploring The Way Ahead for Science Students in India

by Vivek Thakur Employee
It's a debate that starts in every Indian household when science students finish their senior secondary schooling. Engineering or Medicine! Are these the only options that a science student can have? Absolutely not! But the way Indian society has fed this thought into the minds of parents, they have become ignorant towards the vast number of opportunities that exist for their children. As an eighteen year old, one doesn't really possess the intellect for sharp decision-making, even if it is pertaining to their career. Besides, their parents also aren’t that informed to help them take a firm decision on this. But the key to take the right decision is to analyze your core strengths, skill set and areas of interest before choosing either of these careers.

Medicine:

This field is all about commitment as it involves years of studies. It takes close to 10 - 15 years to complete your studies, which includes undergraduate school, medical school, and residential training in a desired specialty. In fact, learning never stops as medical students need to constantly keep themselves updated regarding advancements in their field. Patience and memory are the other key factors that matter for students studying medicine.

Under the category of medicine fall biochemistry, dentistry, pharmacy, microbiology, medicine, surgery, pediatrics, ophthalmology, physiology, pathology, forensic medicine, gynecology and some other specialized fields.

If you are thinking of pursuing medical studies, the following list of best medical colleges in India is surely going to help you:

Someone who wishes to become an engineer needs to have a certain level of intelligence for problem solving. There is a multitude of branches in engineering that a student can choose from. This includes civil, electrical, electronics, mechanical, information technology, automobile or chemical, biotechnology, aerospace technology, aeronautical, etc. To become an engineer, the student needs to pursue four years of B. tech or B.E, which can be followed by 2 more years of specialization, as per the student's aspirations. But to get into the  reputed engineering colleges, one needs to go through an entrance test followed by interviews.

For all those planning to pursue further studies in engineering, the following list of best colleges would be of great help:

  • IIT, Mumbai
  • IIT, Delhi

  • IIT, Kanpur

  • National Institute of Technology, Karnataka

With the advent in technology, there has been an increase in awareness among students and their parents too and therefore, the scenario has changed drastically. Students are choosing their careers based on their skill set and interests now. Students are aware of the emerging careers that are suitable for their skills. With the limited number of seats available for the medical colleges, science students are looking for more options. Another reason is the duration of these courses, which doesn't please many students. As a result of this, science students now are inclined towards other professions that also have high demand outside India. One of these is nursing, a career endowed with allowance and so is pharmacy. Besides, there has also been an increase in the number of science students pursuing non science courses purely due to their passion and interest in them. A student who is good in Mathematics can choose to do chartered accountancy rather than engineering as it equally compliments and hones his skill set. Science students even opt for humanities in pursuit of joining the Civil Services. The other career options these students have been opting for, are media, management, teaching, law, fashion design and many others.

At the end, what matters the most in a career is not money but satisfaction. As a result of this, we see a shift in the career paradigm for science students from having just the conventional options of engineering and medicine to having a plethora of choices. With this, the availability of career choices for science students has definitely come a long way.

This article discusses the career prospects for science students in India. It enlightens the other professions that science students take apart from engineering and medicine. To know job prospects in engineering and other fields, register at Career Builder.
