Explore the Triad Islands in Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic

by Kosher River Cruise Kosher Tour Operator
Perhaps the most ideal place to enjoy a glatt kosher cruise is through the waters of Venice Lagoon, Italy. A low-lying city situated in a marshy area extending along the shorelines of Po and the Piave rivers, this World Heritage Site is revered for its picturesque landscape, bridges, and architecture - not to mention the thriving community linked by these canals. People hailed praises for this lovely city, calling it "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks",  "City of Bridges", and "The Floating City", to name a few.

There are 120 islands in the Venetian lagoon that formed over time, slendering its way to the Adriatic Sea. Some of them are small, uninhabited, and disappear when the tide is high. The big and longer islands however, are scattered gems in the lagoon that is worth taking a kosher cruise detour. Let’s explore the three main islands in the Venetian Lagoon - Murano, Burano, and Torcello.

Murano
Murano

Murano

Murano is a series of islands linked by canals and bridges. It has been the home of Venice’s finest glassmakers since the 13th century, with these glassmakers having become first-class citizens for their craftsmanship. Various glass products can be found here, such as chandeliers, art glass, mirrors, multicolored glass, and glass-made gems.

Today, Museo del Vetro (Murano Glass Museum) keeps records of this historical art, with samples of glass as far back as the Egyptian Times. Make sure to take home a special souvenir from this island.

Burano

Let’s now go to the small but bright fishing village in Venice, Burano Island. Like Murano, Burano is also an archipelago of islands, with four bodies of land connected by bridges. It’s commonly called “Italy’s Rainbow Island'' because of the colorful houses that dot the paths along the waterways. Island living here is simple, quaint, and picture-perfect for tourists.

Here you will also find authentic, intricate Italian lace made by Burano women since the 16th century and is exported around the world. Burano is only 40 minutes away from the canal port, so if you have a liking for lace and fabric, don’t miss the chance to visit!

Torcello

A 5-minute boat taxi away from Burano is the island of Torcello, the northernmost island in the Venetian Lagoon. Torcello is regarded as one of the most important places in Venice, which was believed to be the cradle of Venice's birth as a city more than 1,500 years ago.

Visiting Torcello is like going back in time. It’s a popular attraction to tourists yet maintains its peaceful and laid back atmosphere. Much of the area is accessible by walking. Expect Byzantine mosaics, archaeological finds, and a stone throne believed to be owned by Attila, the leader of the Huns.
