by Manish Kumar Marketing Head

Vadodara, formerly known as Baroda, is Gujarat’s third largest cosmopolitan city situated on the banks of river Vishwamistri. Vadodara is also known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Gujarat’. This city has tourists visiting from all over the world. There is one person who had envisioned a dream to make this big city known for its academic, industrial and cultural aspects and that is Maharaja Sayaji Rao III. Under his reign, Vadodara flourished profoundly and ranked second only to Hyderabad of Nizam among the princely states in the country.

Vadodara’s rich heritage is prominent in every corner of the city. Navratri, meaning nine days is the biggest festival as the major residents of this city happen to be from the native land of Gujarat. People worship the nine avatars of Goddess Durga, the manifestation of Shakti. The festival includes typical dances, known as Garbas and Dandiya Raas, performed by men and women wearing traditional, colorful dresses. The Navratri festival normally falls in the month of October every year. No other city in India celebrates the festival of Navratri with as much zeal and excitement as Vadodara does. Besides Navratri, this city is also known for its  Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Holi celebrations. Vadodara has a lot to offer to its tourists during these festivals.

If you are planning to explore the city to its best, you cannot afford to miss out on some of the major attractions of this place. Starting with one of the most lavish places in India, the Laxmi Vilas Palace. It comprises several other buildings within its complex including the LVP Banquets and Conventions, Moti Baug Palace, and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building. The museum showcases the works from the royal collection which includes paintings by both European and Indian artists. Many Raja Ravi Verma paintings are also on display. To learn about the history of the building, an excellent audio tour is provided accompanied by free drinks and snacks.

Built-in 1894, The Vadodara Museum and Picture Gallery resemble the Victoria & Albert Museum of London. It preserves a great collection of relics relating to a wide spectrum of fields right from archeology to geology. It also comprises a few rare collection pieces of Maharaja Sayajirao III, 109 miniature Mughal paintings, and a Persian version of Mahabharat specially commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Apart from visiting these beautiful places, you can also indulge in a fantastic shopping experience. When it comes to shopping, Vadodara has plenty to offer in terms of both High-end shopping as well as Street shopping. Inorbit Mall, M Cube Mall, and Cinemall are some of the best options for luxury shopping. But, if you opt for street shopping then Khadi Bhandar is great for hand-woven clothes.
