by Amanda Sutcliffe Travel Deals

Zanzibar, Tanzania's semi-autonomous region, comprises the main island of Unguja and Pemba Island. The islands that make up the archipelago produce several top-quality spices, such as nutmeg, black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon. Over the years, an increase in the number of spices produced has given this island destination the term 'Spice Islands'. Every year, plenty of tourists visit this part of the world to explore some fascinating offerings. During your time spent in this island destination, you'll also get the chance to explore the most popular attractions.

Among the famous places worth visiting during your cheap holidays to Zanzibar is the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. It is home to the endangered species of monkeys called 'Red Colobus'. These monkeys were first discovered on the island of Unguja by a Scottish physician, Sir John Kirk. Your visit to this wildlife reserve would also allow you to explore other interesting species of flora and fauna. Besides the wild animals found in the wildlife reserve, you'll also be delighted to explore some marine beings during your visit, such as dolphins and sharks. Another delightful aspect of this wildlife reserve is that a part of the revenue from its entrance fees is used for the construction of health clinics and schools in the local villages.

During your Zanzibar holidays, you'll get to visit one of Stone Town's main historic buildings called the 'Sultan's Palace' or the Palace Museum. It was built in the late 19th century to be used as a residence for the Sultan's family. It was formally renamed People's Palace in the year 1964 and used as a seat of the government. People's Palace became a museum on the royal family of Zanzibar and their history in 1994. Located in Mizingani Road on the seafront, this historic building has one of its floors dedicated to Sultan Khalifa bin Harub and another one to Sayyida Salme, the former princess of Zanzibar.

Your cheap Zanzibar holidays would also allow you to explore a landmark building in Stone Town, called the 'House of Wonders' or 'Palace of Wonders'. Located between the Palace Museum and the Old Fort, this building is one of the palaces that were built for the second Sultan of Zanzibar, Barghash bin Said. Today, it is home to the 'Museum of History and Culture of Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast'. It was named 'House of Wonders' as it was the first building on the island to have electricity and an elevator.

While holidaying in this island destination, you can also visit the Old Fort. Also known as the Arab Fort, this is the oldest structure in the archipelago and a major tourist attraction in Stone Town. It was built by the Omani Arabs after defeating the Portuguese in the late 17th century. The fort comprises magnificent brown walls that protect an inner courtyard. It has been adapted to serve as a cultural centre in recent times with shops that offer paintings and souvenirs for tourists. The complex also includes an open-air amphitheatre, which hosts live music and dance shows.

You can explore the historic Jemaa el-Fna with your cheap holidays to Marrakech.
