Everything You Need to Know About Thread Lift

by Andy Cheng Director

A surgical facelift used to be the only way to take years off a person's face by lifting the skin and removing excess skin from the face. Even though some aesthetic doctors prefer to treat skin laxity using non-surgical methods such as skin resurfacing lasers, once excess skin is present, only a surgery can remove it.

The skin peaks at around the age of 20. After the age of 20, the production of collagen starts to decline, and signs of aging starts to appear in the early 30s. Younger people are seeking treatments early on to prolong their youthful look. The good news is that there are non-surgical procedures that can help you look young for a longer time.

Thread lift treatment

A thread lift is an advanced non-surgical procedure whereby the doctor uses dissolvable sutures to provide a subtle, yet visible lift in the skin. These dissolvable sutures are made of materials that are completely compatible with the human body. These sutures are sometimes used by surgeons to close wounds after surgeries.

The doctor places these fine threads under the skin and guides them with his hands to secure and lift the loose skin to its new position. Firstly, the lift creates an immediate lift and tightens the skin. Secondly, the threads stimulate the body to produce new collagen at the treated areas. When new collagen grows in the face, it provides a longer lasting lift and reverses signs of aging even after the threads have dissolved after a few months.

Collagen stimulation: Important component for younger skin

Collagen is an essential building block that maintains your youthful appearance by keeping the skin firm and lifted. In addition to being used for wound healing, collagen keeps the skin supple. As we grow older, the level of collagen production drops.

Studies found that our skin thickness reduces by 80 per cent when we are about 70 years old. This is mainly caused by the loss of collagen in the skin.

As we grow older, the skin becomes weaker and it is no longer able to support the tissue beneath it. Gravity then takes over, pulling the skin downwards and stretches it. Increasing collagen level in the skin helps to restore firmness to the skin.

Benefits of thread lift

The greatest benefits of a non-surgical thread lift treatment are the minimal recovery time and the immediate, visible result. While it is common to experience some soreness and swelling after the procedure, most people take about 2 days to recover from the discomfort. A non-surgical thread lift is suitable for people who have busy lives and demanding careers where taking a long break from social activities can be challenging.

Thread lift treatments are generally low risk. There is almost no risk of permanent scarring or associated surgical risks. In rare cases, patients may experience infection or extrusion of threads. Such issues can be addressed by removing the threads from the face.

The process of undergoing a thread lift treatment can be pleasant and results can be natural and visible if the right doctor performs the treatment. Don’t be afraid to ask the doctor about his experience in performing thread lift. Ask for before-and-after photos to have a clearer picture of what your outcome will probably be. Only proceed if you are 100 percent comfortable with the doctor and the results you see.
