by Mohit J. White Hat Link Building Services

Colic is a child’s condition characterized by intense and prolonged crying or fussiness in healthy babies. These episodes usually starts for a child at about 6 weeks old and will naturally decrease after 3 to 4 months. There are various treatments such as chiropractic care with a professional like chiropractor in Monmouth County or even with special soothing techniques that parents can do to help ease their child.

  • Symptoms

It is extremely difficult to determine if a newborn has colic or not. Crying and fussing are mainly normal for babies , especially when it happens during the first three months of their life. As such, understanding that the amount of crying is abnormal is not an easy task. However, some symptoms, if noticed, can help you determine if your child has colic or not.

  • Intense crying : it will look more like an expression of pain or a screaming louder than an average baby crying .
  • Facial discoloring : paler skin around the mouth and/or reddening of the face
  • Bodily tensions : stiffened arms and legs, arched back, clenched fists or tense abdomen.
  • Uncontrollable crying : tears for no apparent reason without a need of food or diaper change.
  • High fussiness : stay for a long time even after the diminution of cries
  • Predictable timing : the symptoms will occur mostly in the evening.
  • Causes

Nowadays, researchers are still unsure about what really causes colic for a baby. The reason of this uncertainty is because of the various features that needs to be accounted for while trying to find the cause of this situation. It’s hard to determine why colic happens at certain times of day, how it varies from one child to another and why it usually appears late in the first month of life. However, potential factors that might cause colic have been found :

  • Food intolerances or allergies
  • Childhood migraine in early form
  • Anxiety or stress caused by the environment surrounding the baby
  • Undeveloped digestive system with an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract
  • Infrequent burping
  • Underfeeding or overfeeding your child

  • Risk factors

Risk factors for colic are still pretty unclear. However, researchers determined that preterm pregnancies, formula-fed and breastfed babies as well as the sex of the child might be factors that increase the risk of colic. Additionally,  mothers who smoke increase their chances of a colic development for their future child.

  • Possible complications

There are no long or short term medical problems for a child diagnosed with colic. However, mothers with a child that has colic can feel helplessness, anger, exhaustion and possibly guilt.  It might drive them to an early cessation of breastfeeding. Additionally, the risk of having a postpartum depression can be higher because of this condition.
