The labour laws of South Africa are based on the fundamental tenets set out in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996, which are contained in Chapter 2, Labour and Employment. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa is the supreme law of the country. It came into force on 4 February 199. The constitution may be amended only by a national referendum and not by Parliament.
