Enhancing Self-development: Psychological Perspective

by Sarah Peter Contributor

Philosophy, myths, tales, and legends have helped men to grow for centuries. While it appears that there are universal representations, the most contemporary approach to personal development is the Western approach. Of course, there are variants of personal development for every great culture or civilization (India, China, Central America, etc.). These visions of personal development enlighten us with a different point of view that highlights our own beliefs.

At some point in life, every single one of us needs to work on personal development – no matter who we are or what we do. Generally, people often work more on personal development when they are under pressure or suffering from psychological distress, emotional pain, or dissatisfaction. Such mental states can make them seek solutions and try to overcome these symptoms. Some people can achieve personal growth on their own without any external help. For those who can't, can we rely merely on a psychologist to help them with their self-esteem and self-development issues?

While facing such a question, one could argue against it as self-development is a lot more than the scope of psychology. If you are planning to take on with our self-development by yourself with the help of a shrink, here are some of the aspects that you can work on with your psychologist coach:

Personal Relationships

As social beings, we need to maintain personal relationships and make sure that they are as healthy and satisfactory as possible.

Social skills:

It's quite closely related to the previous point. For someone with poor social skills, it's challenging to achieve the desired personal development since it will interfere in their social and work life.

Motivation:

The lack of motivation and similar problems can significantly stagnate and hinder our progress and growth.

Goals: The psychologist will help people who face difficulties in defining and setting their goals. Success will depend mainly on the solid grounds of what, how, and when.

Attention and Focus:

We must control and direct our attention, both to achieve our objectives and to focus on what can contribute to bringing something positive to our lives.

Emotions: It is essential to know how to regulate our emotions and manage them properly. It is a basic formula for the execution and enjoyment of what we set out to do.

Disorders:

Disorders or mental imbalances, if not controlled and treated, can lead us to fail in our attempt to live a full and happy life.

Coping:

Life is not always a bed of roses. It could be a wild path where we face the pitfalls, and these obstacles can determine how the rest of the journey will be.

Stress:

In today's society, stress is always on the lookout, and it can interfere with everything you do.

Self – esteem:

Those who have sensitive self-esteem will find that their possibilities are restrained. It's essential that we know what our strengths are instead of just looking at our weaknesses.

This list is certainly not a final verdict, and different people may have various issues that they should address. Such measures greatly vary with each personality, and the best way to go about solving them is to work it out with a professional coach.

A psychologist can help the person to achieve an emotional balance, to focus their attention, to improve their interpersonal relationships and their self-esteem, to pursue their goals, and to control the stress that sometimes hinders everything that we do. Psychology is not only useful for those who have a mental disorder, but also for those who want to reach their full potential.
