Effective Rosacea Treatment to Relieve Rosacea Symptoms

by Laura Kyle provide suggestion

Rosacea (roz-ay-sha) is a fairly common skin condition characterized by redness and pimples. In many cases, these pimples are similar to acne vulgaris. That’s why many people – both patients and doctors – often confuse it with acne, which delays its diagnosis. In other cases however, it is easily distinguishable. No matter how it looks, a dermatologist can distinguish rosacea from other skin conditions by physical examination only. In many instances, it is benign. However, if left untreated, it may become chronic, causing significant discomfort for the affected person.

It is a common conception that rosacea is a non-curable condition with sporadic pattern. However, this is not completely true. Rosacea is a diagnosable and controllable condition; you expect to experience long lasting results with proper treatment. Furthermore, this is not contagious or infectious. This condition is more common in people with light skin. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and W.C. Fields are two famous examples of rosacea.

What if I rosacea does not bother me?

If you have mild rosacea and you think that it does not bother you, it is fine to live with it; no treatment is necessary in this case. However, one visit to dermatologist is still recommended. Ask your dermatologist whether there is a chance for your condition to become worse. If there is no apparent chance, you do not need any treatment; but be vigilant if you see an increase in the intensity of your condition.

What are the rosacea treatment options?

We can divide the treatment into three broad categories: topical, oral, and lasers. Let us have a look at these one by one.

  1. Topical treatments – Topical creams are usually the first line of treatment. Topical antibiotic like metronidazole (Flagyl) is applied twice a day. Azelaic acid (Finacea 15%) is also commonly used. Other topical creams include sodium sulfacetamide (Klaron), erythromycin, and clindamycin (Cleocin).

Skin cleansers and chemical peel also provide relief and control. Excessive rubbing and the use of harsh chemicals should be avoided. Recommended cleansers include sulfa-based washes and benzoyl peroxide washes.

  1. Oral antibiotics – Oral antibiotics are effective to treat moderate rosacea. Tetracycline (Symcin), doxycycline (Atridox, Adoxa, Oracea, Vibramycin), minocycline (Minocin, Dynacin), and amoxicillin (Trimox, Dispermox, Amoxil) are commonly prescribed to treat pimples and inflammation in this condition. Your dermatologist must consider common side effects and potential risks when prescribing antibiotics.
  2. Laser and intense pulsed light – The introduction and popularity of lasers for skin treatment have opened new horizons to treat this skin condition. It is now considered the most effective method to treat most types of rosacea. Lasers produce fast, reliable, and noticeable results. The procedure is convenient, and the use of anesthetic gels has made it pain free. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved pulsed dye laser to treat rosacea of all stages and intensities.

The lasers work by targeting the blood vessels in the rosacea lesions. Besides breaking up these infectious blood vessels, lasers also stimulate collagen production, thus promoting a firmer and smoother skin with an even tone. A series of treatments are generally required to achieve desired results.

Tips to control rosacea:

There are some precautions that can significantly help to control rosacea. The first important precaution is sun protection. In addition to sun, there are certain foods that may flare up rosacea symptoms. These foods vary from person to person. You should try to isolate the foods that flare up the symptoms. A qualified dermatologist can help you by guiding about all possible precautions.
