Much of Australia has problems with soil erosion caused by development and construction, and managing that problem effectively has become a major concern of most Australian states. For example, in Sydney, much of the suburban landscape is being developed, including commercial development to residential building construction, over a surface area of around 2000 km sq. This means that there is a continual problem not only with soil erosion, but with problems in air quality, issues with health, and reduction in quality of life for residents in the area. For those who are trying to build new properties, or work on construction with another company, there are a few opportunities to help yourself with construction dust control.

Managing your own dust

Once a company accepts that it needs to do something about dust, the problems of controlling dust needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. The first steps should be taken as soon as landclearing or earthmoving vehicles come onto the site, since their actions will not only result in some movement of loose soil, resulting in dust, but their very transition through the site can also result in soil erosion. One of the most important methods of construction site dust control is watering. Using water on its own, or as part of a solution, can help companies to prevent loose soil from being carried into the atmosphere by high winds or movement of vehicles. Regular wetting of soil is therefore essential for all construction sites.

Making use of products

The pressure on the industry to control its loose soil has resulted in a significant rise in the amount of construction dust control products available. These might include anything from sediment catches, which are used to ensure that loose soil is not carried too far from the construction site, or even chemical stabilisers, which contain compounds designed to bind with loose soil in order to make it a more stable and consistent material, preventing it from being carried away by winds, or by soil disturbance. Simple covering of the ground is also used to help prevent the soil from being disturbed when the construction site is not in use. By using these products effectively, construction companies can manage their dust and debris, and comply with the requirements of their state. They can also help to combat soil erosion, ensuring that their constructions remain standing for years to come.
