DVLA Car Tax Refund- How Long Does It Take To Get A Refund?
Introduction To Car
Tax Refund
Do you no longer owe the vehicle or it’s off the road? Do
you think you owe a car tax refund? Cancel your vehicle tax and claim back tax
refund. Once DVLA is informed, they will automatically cancel your vehicle tax
and will process your refund within 6 weeks only if your situation matched the
below conditions given below:
- If car is sold or transferred to another person inform DVLA straight away, if you delay in informing DVLA may charge fine. You can also inform DVLA online at gov.uk.
- Apply for statutory off road notification (SORN) and tell DVLA if you are taking your vehicle off the road, keeping it in a private place such as garage, land, and driveway. If your vehicle is parked in a public area you won’t be entitled to get car tax refund.
- You need to inform DVLA if your car is scrapped or written off by your insurance company.
- If your vehicle is scrapped, you must take your vehicle to an authorized treatment facility (ATF) which is also known as scrapyard or breaker’s yard. Don’t forget to keep the yellow slip (V5C/3) with yourself from your vehicle log book (V5C) when you gave it to DVLA.
- If the vehicle has been stolen tell local police and your insurance company as soon as possible. The police will inform DVLA about the theft and will update them if the vehicle is found.
- If UK registered vehicle is taken out of the country for less than 12 months, you are still liable to pay tax on your vehicle and if the time period is 12 months or more than that then it would be known as permanent export. Fill in the V5C/4 section in your vehicle log book to get a car tax refund from DVLA.
- If you modify or make changes to your vehicle like change in engine size, fuel type, weight, etc. it will affect how much vehicle tax you pay.
It is worth to know that it is imperative for you to inform
DVLA, if you don’t tell you can be fined £1,000
Please note that you won’t get a refund on any credit card
fees, 5% surcharge on some direct debit payments and the 10% surcharge on
a single 6 month payment. Vehicle owned by a disabled person do not pay vehicle
tax or liable to pay low vehicle tax. You only get a refund for entire months
of remaining tax not for the partial months.
The amount of time
taken by DVLA to refund your road tax depends on how you’re paid:
If an individual is expecting car tax refund in his bank account,
3-5 working days will be taken to make a payment. In case individual pays
vehicle excise duty through direct payment, DVLA will automatically cancelled their
vehicle tax. If individual is expecting refund through a cheque he/she must
wait till 6 weeks to get a refund payment.
