Dr. Alice Prince uses partnership with Department of Energy to Fund Innovation

October 14, 2021. St. Louis, MO) - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs provide grant opportunities to small businesses performing R&D in support of the DOE mission. Grants are competitively awarded for the development and commercialization of new ideas and innovative research. To date, DOE SBIR/STTR programs have provided funding to thousands of small U. S. businesses, including newly established small businesses across the country. Dr. Alice Prince, President & CEO of Pathways United, identified a gap in this program’s awareness initiative and partnered with the DOE to be the bridge for Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) and Women Business Enterprises (WBE).

Pathways United, led by Dr. Alice Prince, created an entrepreneurship support series which literally walks a small business owner through a tedious and tenuous paperwork process to qualify for SBIR/STTR awards. The company hosts monthly “Lunch and Learn” workshops for participants to understand the inner workings and requirements of grant award funding. Dr. Alice Prince strategically assigns an Entrepreneur Support Specialist to assist small businesses with Sam.gov registration, MBE/WBE certifications, and other beneficial company designations that support the small business advancement. ’ These business owners have innovation. They are not imposters who lack technical skill and ability. They are highly qualified entrepreneurs. My company is providing them with the access to showcase their intellectual property,” said Dr. Alice Prince during a call about the need for diversity and inclusion within the bioenergy sector. Projects must have the potential for commercialization and meet specific DOE mission-specific R&D needs.

“The DOE Office of SBIR/STTR Programs works collaboratively with 13 program offices throughout the DOE. Each DOE program office considers its high priority research needs and program mission, as well as the Department’s goals in developing their SBIR/STTR research topics. The specific research topics selected for the SBIR and STTR programs are developed by DOE technical program managers. DOE annually awards approximately 400 Phase I and 200 Phase II awards with an annual budget of more than $300 million and offers more than sixty technical topics and 250 subtopics, spanning research areas that support the DOE mission in Energy Production, Energy Use, Fundamental Energy Sciences, Environmental Management, and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.” Dr. Alice Prince, of Pathways United, is helping spread awareness and creating opportunities for all people with scientific innovation to help our nation and the environment as a whole. "People don't know that the US Department of Energy will fund your business' scientific and technological research," says Dr. Alice Prince. "I want to spread the word with Pathways United and continue to spur scientific discovery, especially within the bioenergy sector."
