Douglas Mattress Review: A Mattress for Canadians by Canadians

by Sleep Sherpa Sleep Expert

The Douglas mattress is a true Canadian mattress. It is made with materials all sourced from Canada, was designed by Canadians and can only be bought in Canada. This is a memory foam mattress that uses more eco-friendly foams than the competition which makes it a more responsible choice at a great price point.  Currently a queen size Douglas retails for $799 Canadian which makes it a fantastic value.

Overview of the Douglas Mattress

This mattress comes roll packed and shipped in a box to your doorstep. It takes about a week after placing your order for the mattress to arrive. Opening the mattress is as easy as removing the plastic packaging and letting the mattress expand to its full shape. It should be ready to sleep on in about 4-5 hours.

This mattress comes with a 120 night trial which means you can have it for about 4 months and if not happy, return it for a full refund. You don’t have to pay return shipping either. Douglas will work with you to make the return process easy and painless. If you want to keep your Douglas, you are backed by a 15 year warranty. Most online mattress company warranties are 1o years.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress.

How is the Douglas Mattress Made?

Douglas mattress layers

According to their website, Doulgas mattresses are made with Canadian-built foams and fabrics. The top 2” comfort layer is made of ecoLight™ cooling gel foam, developed to be 50% less taxing on our environment but just as durable as high density memory foam. The middle 2” layer is made of Elastex™ foam to give the mattress just the right amount of bounce. The bottom 6” support foam isolates movement and provides better edge support. The washable cover is made from an eco-friendly Natural Eucalyptus Fabric™.

My Douglas Mattress Findings

When you first lay down on this mattress you will notice that it immediately contours to your spine. This gives the mattress a soft feeling. You are then supported by the middle and base layer at the bottom.

Here’s a photo of my 14 lb. bowling ball to illustrate the point.

This is an all foam mattress so motion transfer is contained. In comparison to the hundreds of other mattresses I have reviewed the top layer recovers quickly for being a foam mattress making it easier to switch positions at night. You won’t get that stuck feeling that dense foam mattresses known for.

Here’s a vidoe showing how each layer of the mattress reacts.

My Douglas Mattress Recommendations

Overall I would rate this mattress on the softer end of the spectrum. I really like how the top layer feels. It is soft but recovers really quickly given how well it contours. This is what really makes the Douglas stand out from the other competition among the Canadian offerings. I think side sleepers will love this mattress because it really addresses pressure relief for your hips but especially your shoulders. Because the top layer of foam recovers fast, you don’t have to wait to get your, “spot” back when shifting positions or getting out of bed then coming back.

I recommend the Douglas to side back and occasional stomach sleepers that want quick contouring and a softer feel without sacrificing support or pressure relief. This mattress also sleeps on the cooler end of the spectrum for a memory foam mattress.
