Does the Canada NOC List Display Occupations in Demand across Canada?

There is no official list of occupations that are in-demand across Canada. However, people often confuse the National Occupational Classification (NOC) as a substitute for the in-demand occupation list. This is not the case. The Canada NOC list simply comprises all the occupations that are practiced in Canada, categorized according to the work duties and skill level or type required for performing these occupations. It does not indicate which of these occupations is facing labor shortages.

However, there are occupation lists associated to some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) which enumerate all the occupations – within a particular province or territory – wherein foreign workers are required to fill vacancies that cannot be domestically filled. For instance, Administrative Officers and Assistants may be in-demand as per the Alberta PNP Occupation List, but this does not mean that foreign nationals belonging to these occupations are in-demand everywhere across Canada.

Each of the occupations on these province-specific lists is mentioned alongside a numeric NOC code, which is essential for applicants to verify if their job profile matches the work duties associated to the occupation. Also, PNPs have various sub-categories or streams. To qualify for a particular stream, candidates must belong to a specific NOC Skill Type or Level.
