Does Size Matter When Buying Women's Clothes?

by A.Rrajani Photographer A.Rrajani

Do sizes matter? That's a question I hear often from women who are shopping for plus size clothing. For the most part, yes they do. Just because you have a smaller waistline or are curvy doesn't mean that department stores and online retailers are going to give you exactly the size you want. In fact, you may be surprised by the results!

First, make sure the website you're using has a size chart. If it doesn't or can't be navigated easily, don't even bother trying to access the site. You'll end up wasting time and looking for something that won't fit when you really need it to.

Second, don't believe the size magazines. While they may seem to offer the latest and greatest styles and trends, they may not be accurate. Plus, the models they show may not be your actual body size.

Third, if you already know your size, make sure you buy clothing of the right fit. Don't just look at the size on the tag; actually try them on and measure them. Even if the label says it's a one-piece dress, don't just assume it will fit. Also, don't wear something you think you'll look good in just to fit in. Unless it is an outfit that will help you look and feel your best, you're just wasting your money.

Fourth, even if the site or retailer offers sizes six, eight, nine, and ten, don't ever buy a garment in those sizes. The garments will either be too long, too short, or the wrong size. If you are a plus-size woman, make sure you choose tailored, well-fitted pieces. And for the men, make sure your pants go with your shirt. You never know when one might run across the floor and get lost.

Fifth, if you can, try on several different styles. If a style looks good on you but it doesn't fit right, it's likely the style you were trying on was wrong. Also, don't buy anything that doesn't fit your size. If a product is too small, it may constrict your movement and you won't be able to exercise as well. On the other hand, if you buy something too large, it will make you look as though you'd swallowed a sponge.

Sixth, do your research before you purchase. Some online retailers don't offer sizes smaller than a woman's size, so it's important to look carefully at their return policy and their exchange policy. In addition, you should make sure the site is secure before giving your credit card information. Don't sign up for accounts with sites that have been known to have had many problems with security. In fact, some thieves may use stolen credit card numbers to set up bogus accounts in your name.

Finally, keep in mind that some brands of women's clothing are made for larger people, such as themselves. If you've had a family member who has been in a wheelchair for years or has difficulty walking, these brands may be a good choice. Just keep in mind that if a piece of clothing seems unflattering on you, it probably doesn't look so good on someone else either.

There are also different reasons for the need for different sizes. Some people simply want clothes that fit properly.  However, women who want a conservative look may not be able to pull off a more revealing top. The key here is to be proportionate in terms of your body size.

There are also special size groups for certain types of clothes. These usually aren't designed for large women, so plus-sized clothing will generally look better on smaller women. Keep in mind, though, that these clothes usually cost more, too.

In general, size does matter when you're buying women's clothes. You do need to consider what style will work best for your body. Think about what your best shape is and buy clothes that flatter that figure. Remember, it's not worth spending more money on clothes that don't look good on you if you're just going to complain later.
