Does Hair Transplant Give Permanent Results?

by Dr Rajat Gupta - RG Aesthetics Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon

If you are one of the millions of men affected by thinning hair or balding, you have inevitably come across "permanent hair growth solutions" either in the form of pills or oils and serums that you can apply for a fuller head of hair. However, all these seemingly permanent solutions have also inevitably failed or, even worse, have not worked at all.

Male pattern baldness (MPB) is the reality of several men. It remains such a large reality because there is a lack of knowledge about MPB. MPB is treated as a symptom of hormonal imbalance or other such wrong conceptions. While imbalances can cause hair loss, MPB specifically requires a more advanced procedure - a hair transplant.

What is a hair transplant?

Hair transplant involves extracting hair grafts from follicular units in a donor site and transplanting them into the balding or thinning areas. This is an outpatient procedure typically done over a couple of sessions for the best results.

The donor site is usually the sides or back of the head since androgens cause MPB. Androgens affect hair growth in specific parts but do not impact hair growth on the sides and back. Therefore, when hair is transplanted to the bald spot from these regions, it is moved with the follicle. This means that it is transferred as a living entity that genetically cannot be affected by the androgens that could cause the hereditary balding otherwise.

This makes hair transplant results permanent.

How does hair behave after transplantation?

Apart from this being the only way to ensure permanent hair growth, there are several benefits to hair transplant procedures. The most obvious of these is that hair behaves as if it were always supposed to be there.

As long as you have a surgeon who understands how your hair is supposed to behave and which direction it is supposed to follow, you are sure to get excellent hair transplant results. For the first month, after your transplant is complete, your newly moved hair falls out. However, the follicle and the root - the living part - stays. Then new hair grows from there, at a typical rate of 1cm per month. Therefore, you see the full results within 8-10 months after the procedure.

Hair transplant procedures are the only way to regrow your hair permanently. Although they take some time to show results, they are worth it and solve MPB, boosting the self-esteem of men all over the world!
