Does ghee go bad: How to store ghee?

by Milkio Foods Grass-Fed ghee from New Zealand

Ghee is a shelf-stable dairy product, offering a higher shelf-life than any other dairy product. Then why the question arises, does ghee go bad? Many ghee users often find their ghee releasing an odd smell, which indicates the product has gone rancid. Ghee does not go bad quickly if you provide proper storage conditions. Ghee is the clarified version of butter loaded with some essential vitamins and nutrients. The quality of ghee is a big concern when it comes to ghee’s shelf-life. Pure ghee has a light golden color and a fresh nutty aroma. If you see any change in its color or aroma, discard it immediately,

Have a look at the below-mentioned points on how to store ghee properly -

  1.  When storing ghee, make sure to choose an airtight glass jar. After every use, make sure you put the lid tightly so that dirt or moisture can’t enter the jar.

  2. Ghee can go rancid if you expose the ghee under direct sunlight for a long. Keep it in a cool, dark kitchen cabinet to increase the shelf-life of ghee.

  3. Dipping your finger in the ghee jar can be another reason behind its rancidity. Use a clean and dry spatula to take out the product.

  4. Make sure the ghee jar is completely dry before storing it. Ghee can last up to one year if you take care of all the abovementioned points.
