Does Everybody Need Dog Health Insurance?

Let’s face it, we can’t predict an accident let alone when our dogs might encounter one. We don’t know when they’ll get sick or injured either, so an anticipated expensive visit to the vet naturally becomes one reason why you want to consider getting them insured.

However, there are people too who, in the mere excitement of owning a new pet, rush to buy them ‘protection’, not knowing whether their pet needs it or that there’s more to it in terms of deductibles, premiums, and co-pays than meets the eye.

With an insurance company who is keen to return most of your money, pet insurance appears to be a great deal. However, not every pet parent turns out lucky.

How It Works

It is not unlike your medical health insurance.

  1. Take the pet to vet.
  2. Pay the bill
  3. Submit a claim against your pet insurance

You’ll have the consent of a majority of insurance providers on seeing any licensed vet. The reimbursement for the coverage options among the following levels is what varies.

Full coverage: This is the topmost tier available. It covers all the medical expenses for your pet, including accidents, routine exams, illnesses, vaccinations, dental care, and spaying and neutering.

Emergency, illness and routing coverage: This would provide for your pet in case of sudden illness, accidental injuries, along with the surgeries and treatments it needs to remain healthy. Besides this, you are allowed to file claims regarding vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and a physical exam once annually.

Emergency and illness coverage: As the name suggests, this would cover the accident and unexpected illness part. The company takes care of the visits, of the necessary medical care, and x-rays.

Emergency coverage: The most basic and cheapest of all levels, this would get your pet insured for hospitalization, necessary medical treatment, and vet bills when they are involved in an accident only.

Decide on what type of coverage your dog needs instead of what you prefer because there will be a monthly premium that you’d be asked to pay for the coverage. Plus, as insurances work, you’ll have a maximum per incident and per year to consider. Where some providers give multiple pet discounts, other have breed restrictions. So you may want to do your research regarding providers too.

Final Word

There’s no doubt about the fact that pet insurance helps you keep your pet healthy through proper budgeting, making it affordable and not-so-difficult especially during economical hardships. The problem is that not everybody needs the same level of protection. When deciding on pet insurance, therefore, it’s important that you keep your dog’s current health, their age, and your finances in mind. If you have healthy young adult dogs or young puppies, you’d not need to visit the vet often, that is if your pet is not accident-prone.  But, where the basic pet insurance saves you a couple of bucks on monthly premiums, they may call for a higher deductible on each incident. If you’re still confused as to what’s best for your pug, begin with the lower tier because you can always add another level later when it’s necessary.
