Do Meditation and Yoga Really Work?
So, people in Jersey of probably told you to seek out meditation in Brick, or perhaps yoga in Brick. But, what’s the first thing you think of when you picture yoga, meditation and all of that? Depending on your experiences, it’s either something cartoonish, or you think back to all of those “New Age” people from the 60s and the early 90s, the ones into crystals, sitar music and incense. A lot of them, especially in the 60s, were burning more than just incense, of course.
Well, meditation is the one thing in these groups of very ancient practices which doesn’t have any medical evidence to back it up, but that’s because it’s not about medicine and the physical body so much. Yes, you can sleep better and feel better through proper meditation, but that’s not the immediate goal of meditation, it’s all about the “spiritual” aspect of healing and self-maintenance. Now, for those out there are very scientific mind like myself, when I say “spiritual” I don’t mean anything supernatural nor religious by this.
What I actually mean what I say “spiritual” is your internal self, your emotions, your psyche, that intangible part of you that isn’t made of squishy bits. There are various ways to perform this kind of maintenance, some people find a Zen in meditative experience in a hobby, and art, or even in their profession. Those are lucky people, for the rest of us, we either have to follow the Western approach of therapy and psychiatry, or for those of us who don’t think we are quite that hot of a mess, meditation.
There are a lot of public spaces that allow you to meditate, such as Buddhist and Hindu temples, or you can just learn about meditation through the Internet, and take any place you find peaceful and safe, a place that insults tranquility and peace and you. Some like nature, I just like a nice dark room, cool, with some soft, positive music. Yeah, I’m pretty vanilla like that.
As for yoga, yoga is one of those ancient practices based on an understanding of the flow of energy through the body. While yoga is not a Chinese invention, but rather an Indian one, it does work on that same understanding of Chi, or the ancient impression of the nervous system and its electrical impulses, to realign the body, stretch muscles, improve circulation and exercise the proper aspects of the nervous system.
Before seeking yoga in Brick, consult a physician and make sure that you are in good medical condition, yoga is actually more tiring and demanding than it may initially look. As for meditation in Brick, that’s entirely up to you. I suggest consulting someone else who is in the meditation, and using them as a starting point. There are different approaches to meditation, millions in fact, and it depends entirely upon which one you find yourself best suited for.
