India is famous for its sweets, Indian desserts, like much of the vast South Asian country’s food, differ from region to region, with coconut confirming especially popular throughout the tropical south. Gulab Jamun

Usually regarded to as Indian doughnuts, gulab jamun is deep-fried dumplings that are soaked in sugar syrup laced with rose water. Intensely sweet, just one small dumpling will be adequate to indulge your craving (unless, of course, you have a major sweet tooth).

 

 Jalebi

Sweet, sticky and irresistible, jalebi is deep-fried Indian sweets that are immersed in sugar syrup. The batter is ordinarily made of chickpea powder and the yellow colour is derived from saffron or - sometimes - artificial colourings.

 

Kheer 

A creamy Indian rice dessert laced with cardamom, kheer is often served with sliced blanched almonds and raisins. It is usually enhanced with saffron for very festive occasions such as Diwali or weddings.

 

Ladoo

These ball-shaped sweets are often made of each chickpea flour, semolina or ground coconut depending on the area. The mixture is cooked into a paste and rolled into balls once cooled.

 

Rasmalai

A special sweet-smelling dish of cottage cheese dumplings steeped in cardamom-infused milk syrup. Rasmalai recognises from West Bengal but is enjoyed throughout much of India.

 

Barfi

Ordinarily cut in a diamond or square shape, barfi is a fudge-like Indian sweet made with condensed milk and sugar (but not only). Coconut, almonds, pistachios and edible silver leaf are simple additions.
