Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) are intended to protect the cable downstream of the device against overloads and short circuits, preventing damage to cables and equipment. MCBs are installed in modern consumer units or in MCB boxes. These are a convenient alternative to fuses as they can be reorganized without having to replace the wire with a simple flick of a switch or button.

How does it work?

An MCB works by falling when,

A circuit is overloaded or

A short circuit has occurred in the system, and

Has a current rating such as

6A or 10A depends upon its intended use Residential, commercial, industrial or public buildings are using this device in big amounts. MCB scores relate to constant service under specified installation conditions, although cables can carry higher currents for short periods without causing permanent damage.

Types of MCB

There are three types of MCB installed in the MCB boxes. All three types use a magnetic fault shield, which drops the MCB within one-tenth of a second when the overload reaches a set level.

  • Type B – this type of MCB trips between 3 and 5 times full load current. This type is commonly used in domestic systems and light marketable applications where flows are low. An example to justify this is a place where inrush currents may come from a small number of fluorescent fittings.

  • Type C – this type MCB trips between 5 and 10 times full load current. This is most suitable for commercial and industrial use where there are heavy motors. Somehow a high number of fluorescent fittings is also suitable. When switched off together may cause a high inrush current.

  • Type D – this type of MCB trips between 10 and 20 times full load current. This unit is for more specialist industrial use, where current inrushes are higher, for example with X-ray machines and transformers.

Key points of MCB Boxes

Admired for excellent flow control efficiency

Dimensional uniformity and durable surface finish

Easy to install and maintain

Excellent electrical insulation and high tensile strength

Whichever type of MCB you are using, it is extremely dangerous to cut corners by using low-quality MCB boxes with MCBs. You should only be bought from a reputable MCB and MCB manufacturer.
