Different Finishes Available for Travertine Tiles

by Tile Power Floor & Wall Tiles Company
When it comes to kitchen tiles, modern homeowners trust travertine tiles without a second thought. But the real confusion arises when terms like honed, polished, tumbled, brushed etc are thrown at them and they are not sure what to buy and what will fit bets into their dream kitchen. Travertine tiles come in oodles of styles and finishes. The most popular are honed, tumbled, brushed, polished and straight edge finish. Have a look at the different finishes that you can find when you are out shopping for travertine tiles and the details that make them different from one another:

Honed finish: A honed finish travertine tile can be either filled or unfilled. In this type of tile one side of the unfinished stone is grinded to achieve a smooth texture. You can choose between a dull matte and a high sheen finish depending on your choice. Most homeowners prefer a honed and filled travertine tile for use in floors, walls, bathroom, shower, and kitchen as well as pool area.

Tumbled finish: A tumbled finish is one wherein different pieces of stone are cut to almost similar size and put in rubber coated or plastic barrel in such a way that the stones rub against the surface of each other. Abrasive grit and water is packed between the stones. The whole process may take around 3-5 weeks and involves at least three steps using different types of grit. One important thing to note here is that the tumbled tiles should be sealed before and after grouting.

Brushed finish: For a brushed travertine tile, the surface of the stone is brushed until the desired texture is obtained. This type of finish is often unfilled and not as common as the previous two types.

Polished finish: This type is often filled and is obtained in the same way as a honed finish. It has a smooth texture and a glossy finish that gives it a reflective appearance. Polished travertine tile is ideally used in walls and avoided in floors in wet areas.

Straight edge: A straight edge travertine stone is commonly found on pavers. The stone is first cut from a block and then unmodified. The chiseled edge gives the stone a weather look. Although a chiseled edge can be applied to any finish, it is most commonly used with a brushed or honed finish. Straight edge finish can be smooth or rough depending on the quality of the stone.
