Differences Between Indian & Harley

by Brian Wallace Affiliate Marketing

The two most iconic motorcycles in American history have to be the Indian and the Harley. A Harley motorcycle is easily recognizable by its sound and look. Anyone who loves war movies and TV shows will likely recognize the definitive Indian motorcycle with its sleek and conventional design. Which motorcycle is right for you? Read on for a performance analysis of Indian vs. Harley.

The Classic Bike - Indian

The Indian Motorcycle brand is all-American. The first motorcycles were produced in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts, but the company was founded in 1897 and first made bicycles. Indian motorcycles were popular for military use during World War I, which left a gap in the public market. The company went bankrupt in 1953 and stopped producing bikes. In 2011, Polaris bought the company and brought Indian styled motorcycles back to the market.

The Harley Tradition

The first Harley motorcycles were produced in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1903. The company thrived in its early years through innovations in motorcycle-technology, such as the “Ful-Floteing Seat” and the teardrop gas tank. Modern Harley riders are more of a devotee and brand representative than mere riders. A Harley represents tradition, community and freedom. Although Harley has had problems with its reputation, it hasn’t had the financial issues that plagued Indian, which has allowed it to dominate the market.

Which Motorcycle Performs Best?

Talk to any Harley rider and they’ll tell you that Harley is the best motorcycle with top performance. Indian riders say the same thing about their brand. Polaris’ bikes are fairly new to the market, even though they have years of tradition. In 2015, when the market was in a lull, Indian was gaining some of its market sales over Harley, but that doesn’t say a lot about their performance.

The Indian Chief Classic is a stylish remembrance of motorcycles of the past, but its technology is nothing but forward-thinking. Anti-lock brakes, cruise control and keyless ignition make this bike comfortable and safe, blending the old and the new. Harley’s model, the Softail Deluxe, is similar in specs to the Chief, but it has the traditional look of the Harley. Harleys are often called “works of art” for their styling. A Harley full system exhaust increases power and performance.

Both companies deliver well-made bikes. Polaris has had some recalls in the past, but those problems are being worked out and handled. Performance-wise, you can’t go wrong with either brand for cruising. It’s up to you to decide which features fit your style and needs. Some experts think smaller Indian motorcycles, like the Indian Scout out-perform the Harley sports models.

Choose Your Bike For Your Preference

The best way to choose the bike you want is to test drive a few to see how each one handles for the way you ride. The sportier Indian bikes may appeal to younger riders, while the touring models are definitely branded for Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers. Upgrade your bike with cruiser motorcycle seatsand other after market accessories that improve your riding experience. The best bike for you often comes down to your preference.
