Difference Between Fashion, Commercial, Editorial Photography
by A.Rrajani Photographer A.Rrajani
DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN FASHION COMMERCIAL AND EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY includes many points to consider. As a professional photography student, I've spent many years studying the art of commercial and editorial photography. Through my work as a teacher of film study, I have been fortunate to gain an understanding of color, composition, and lighting that I can apply to my work. Here, I'll share a few of the finer points of editing and commercial photography that can be utilized by beginning photographers.
First of all, keep in mind that the fashion and music industries are absolutely two separate entities. While one may be directly tied to the other, they should never be thought of as one. Just because someone is in the music business does not mean they are a DJ, nor does it mean they are performing fashion. The two genres can and should be thought of as complementary to one another, but they are not one and the same.
For example, did you ever notice the red carpet at the Oscars? Even though the carpet was red, it was obvious to any onlooker that it was not being set up by a professional photographer. This is the same for fashion and entertainment newsprint. A Fashion Editor will be responsible for knowing whether or not the pictures chosen for print are appropriate for the subject matter. If the pictures were chosen do not mesh well with the subject, there may be problems with the story and images themselves.
Commercials and fashion magazines are very different, however. A fashion editor is responsible for choosing the subjects for magazine layouts and feature stories. They are also heavily involved in choosing the styles and types of clothing that will be featured. The goal of a fashion editor is to attract publicity and increase the circulation of printed magazines. The editor must put together a compelling story and be able to tell it through photographs and text. A great fashion picture often makes its way straight to the front page of a newspaper or magazine.
There are many types of editors. Some specialize in women's fashion, while others handle both men's and women's fashions. A fashion writer must have an in-depth knowledge of the fashion industry and have written extensively about similar topics. They will need to have solid references and strong writing skills. A freelance fashion editor may work for an established company, starting out at a smaller company before eventually making the leap to a major publishing house.
When considering which editor will best meet your needs, it is important to interview several. Interviewing fashion designers will give you a good feel for what the fashion world is like. If you can, interview several fashion editors. This will allow you to gauge their knowledge, opinions, and work ethic. Ask for examples of the type of work they have done in the past, and how they go about putting together a complete fashion spread.
Look for an editor who is willing to discuss their opinions with you. You should be able to tell if they are opinionated and confident in their own abilities by reading their work. Being confident and opinionated is another sign of professionalism.
DifFERENT Fashion Marketing editor will bring the printed media world the latest trends and styles. With years of experience, they know what works and what does not. They are able to anticipate what readers will think and how they will react to a particular style. The perfect DIFFERENT fashion editor will help establish a connection with their readers and help them build a wardrobe.
There are many websites online that offer DIFFERENT fashion tips. This allows the aspiring fashion designer the ability to follow trends before they happen. They will also be well informed about fabric swatches. This will help them make educated buying decisions. They will also have a much better idea about the cost of certain fabrics and pieces.
DIFFERENT fashion marketing editor has a very unique perspective on fashion. They are well connected in the fashion world. In fact, the magazine's author is often considered an "in-person" expert.
