There has been rapid progress in India in the area of socio-economic sphere over the last decades. Many people have been alleviated from poverty, literacy rate has tripled, life expectancy has gone high and people have good access to various healthcare services. Nevertheless, as a result of the enormity of India, both in terms of social-cultural diversity and demography and area, many are still bereft of a decent and quality life. Even presently, many are struggling in trying to get basic amenities such as health, education, shelter and nutritious food. The profit of the economic progress in India hasn’t been uniform in nature. There has been widespread inequality in the economy and this is where NGOs in India comes to play. Their job is to simply bridge the gaps from what the government left by improving the lives of the communities that are marginalized.

Various activities are undertaken by these NGOs in India, with most centered on improving the socio-economic status of the communities with restricted means. This NGOs help in the provision of direct benefit such as the distribution of feed to children that are malnourished to the empowerment of people by making them realize the significance of sending their children or ward to school. Areas where we have seen the appreciative and active roles of NGOs in India are as follows:

  • NGOs in India are active in promoting and developing the girl child in India. Particularly in the area of population, they have remained less beneficial by the different measures adopted by the government. The education of the girl child and the deprived people has been the key target of most NGOs.
  • In the society, women are more vulnerable. Issues such as gender discrimination are a ubiquitous cultural reality happening everywhere. In the upbringing pattern in the family, girls are discriminated. Most of these girls are undernourished and the retention rate of girls in school is much less when compared to boys. Apart from this, women are denied political participation and are forced to work as housewife
