If you are done with short listing the major tourist hotspots like the royal palaces and the parks, you may consider spending some of your time witnessing the desalination plant that is the place which will definitely save London when there is a drought.

What is desalination?

It is the process by means of which the drinking water is processed out of the sea. This is mainly done so that the places having dry and hot environment do not get affected when there is a drought. Places like Barcelona, Sydney and London have their individual desalination plants which will offer the much required help when it is required. In London, the plant is named as the Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works and it was incepted in the year 2012.

The pristinely flowing River Thames serves 6.2 million Londoners which has indicated that the population has increased in the period up to 2016 and will place strain on the water system and its ability to maintain the supply during the need.

The construction of the Desalination plant happened at the site of Beckon Sewerage Works and the construction began way back in 2008. Since no drought has taken place since 2012, the new desalination plant has not been used. In order to check whether everything is on order or not, the Thames Water switches it on for three months on a yearly basis. The plants aimed for desalination projects are quite expensive and get even costlier to run because it is not that much easy to take the salt out of the water.

Why are the desalination plants required?

It is said that the city of London experiences rain almost all round the year so why are the plants required? Normally we d not find plants in a city which experiences rainfall in abundance. London city happens to be damp and dreary but it gets less annual rainfall on an average than what is generally experienced by cities like Sydney and Barcelona.

The water supply of London comes mainly from the ground water. Almost 20% comes from the ground level and the remaining 80% comes from the River Thames. Every winter, the water is topped up ground. If the winters are drier then the river water starts dropping and it risks the water capacity of the city.

The desalination plant project works as a backup solution for the drought situations. This mainly provides resilience to the water supply system of the English capital. When the capital experiences a few dry winters at a stretch, the desalination plant works in favour of the city’s lack of water supply. If it gets operated in full strength, it has the capacity to supply water to almost 400,000 homes which is equivalent to giving water to 900,000 people.

Stay at the Kensington Park hotel London for experiencing the River Thames from a close proximity. It always happens to be quite a majestic experience to enjoy the enthralling exquisiteness of the English capital and its wondrous way of assuring people that everything has been well planned. The city is a true cosmopolitan by heart and appears to be extremely well planned in all its endeavours.

The location of the plant

You can get the opportunity to explore the famous desalination plant while putting up at one of the 4 star hotels in Kensington London. The plant is positioned on the site of Beckon Sewage Treatment Works which is right on the shore of the Thames Estuary. It utilizes the water from the estuary when the tide goes out so that the water remains less salty. The water in the Estuary is quite dirtier and it is mostly because of the river sediment that gets washed up as the tide comes in and out.
