DC to DC Converter: What It's About

by Avinash Mittal Blogger

A dc to dc converter is an electronic device that converts direct current (DC) electricity to another dc voltage. These converters used in various applications, but all serve the same purpose: To change DC into another dc voltage. This article will illustrate how these devices work and the different types available on the market today!

How Do They Work?

These converters found at any electronics store - convert dc power from one form to another according to two basic principles: The first principle states that energy flows from higher potential or "voltage" sources toward lower potentials. So, for example, if you have your handheld battery connected directly to your laptop, it would slowly charge your battery. The second principle states that DC can be converted to dc voltage by using a transformer.

Types of Converters

Step Down: A step-down converter changes dc power from a higher potential, or "voltage," into dc power at a lower potential - typically between 12 and 24 volts dc. These are most commonly used in automotive applications because they don't require as much space as other converters since many components for the vehicle's electrical system run on 12v dc already.

Step Up: A step-up converter is the opposite of a step-down converter and converts low dc voltages, such as those found in automotive systems (12-24Vdc), into high dc voltages usually ranging from 24-240V dc.

Trickle Charger: A trickle charger is a type of dc power supply that charges a battery at a very low rate. Typically less than 0.25 amperes or 250 milliamps (mA), when rated for 12 volts dc input and 500 mA when rated for 220 volts dc input to reduce the internal resistance of lead-acid batteries over time. It contrasts with rapid chargers that can charge at up to 16 amps but only use them temporarily before switching back to trickle charging mode after about 45 minutes on average.

The benefits of using a converter are:

Increased compatibility with other dc devices

Works well as a power supply in many applications, such as dc to dc converter

Reduces the need for batteries or fuel cells

Thus, dc conversion is essential and something that has been used and developed for quite some time. There are many advantages to using one of these converters, making it a necessary piece of anyone's life. The increased compatibility with other dc devices makes them very useful when finding the right equipment while travelling abroad. They can be easily found at most electronics stores and don't require much effort during installation if they are plug and play models, making them reasonably easy to use.
