Darjeeling- The history lies behind
Darjeeling wasn’t always associated with tea. It first got associated with the Britishers as popular holiday destinations. It was in the year 1835 when the Britishers acquired the 7,000 ft high ridge on which the destination perches from the Sikkim rulers as an infirmary to give life to the colonial servants who drained out of the heat on the plains. This mountain retreat soon became one of the fashionable resorts for the British residents of Calcutta who were excited to have a view of the snow capped Kanchenjunga which is the highest mountain peak in India. Tea reached Darjeeling in the year 1840 when Dr. Campbell, a Scottish surgeon planted bushes from China.
Darjeeling metaphorical gabled bungalows, bandstands and faded photos in the planters club invoke the ghost of that time. In the late afternoon a stroll through the Chowrasta, the main square, discovered a vibrant, lively place unfettered by the past. In this place the world viewed the reunion of the Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetans with the locals and the India tourists as they walkway listening to musicians playing the sarangis (a stringed wooden instrument) or sit chatting on its green benches when the nearby Observatory Hill bells clanged in the temple of Mahakala, worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists.
Until 1881 the tourists visited the place in Bullock carts trundling up the winding track which is still called the Hill Cart Road. But with the invention of toy train pulled by a blue Glasgow built steam locomotives visitors completed the final stage of the railway journey. With growing popularity of the hill station, more and more tourist planned their holidays to Darjeeling and this gave a fillip to the hotel industry. Various Darjeeling luxury resorts were built for the tourist to enjoy the mystic beauty of the hill station in an exotic manner with delicious food and aromatic tea wines.
These resorts are located and perched on the hilltops boundary by the big tea estates of the area. December, January, and February are the only dormant months; the first flush is produced from the leaves plucked in the month of March and April. The first flush is light crisp and spring like with a tinge of citrus. May and June are the months for the second flush. July to mid-October yields a stronger monsoon flush. And finally, furnishes the autumn flush. As the resorts are located amidst the tea garden, they are also called as tea estate resorts in Darjeeling. Therefore, Darjeeling is a hill station that will help you explore mountains, bird’s, tea and the mystic weather prevailing there.
