Dangers of Cosmetics

Women are very conscious about their skin. They try everything that they think might help in order for them to look their best. A study has proven that teenagers who wear cosmetic products have harmful chemicals in their urine and blood. This study was conducted while testing the urine and blood of white, black, Asian and ethnic teenagers. The purpose was to find out about the dangers of cosmetics.

Through the findings, they have gathered that many young people are suffering from endocrine disruptions. Teenagers are experimenting with lotions, makeup, lipsticks, eye shadows, perfumes, creams, astringents and soaps; this is especially prevalent in adolescents. An alarming increase of consciousness among young women can also be the reason why there are so many of these harmful products on the shelves today. Some of the dangers include:

  1. Increased reproductive and developmental problems – Problems associated in reproductive and development caused by the chemical called phthalates found in some cosmetic products.
  2. Increases the risk of having asthma and allergies – The chemicals found in cosmetic products can increase the possibility of asthma and allergies. Due to the following ingredients, asthma and allergies may be triggered in persons pre-disposed to them:
    1. Strong fragrances in perfumes, soaps, shampoo, colognes, deodorants, creams and make-up.
    2. Very thick liquid products.
    3. Lubricated products.
    4. Cosmetic products with a strong color.
  3. Increases the risk of cancer – Cosmetics damage can be very risky. Those types of products also increase the risk of having cancer. The chemicals in soaps and other products have found to be a cancer cell generating enzymes. Here is the list of substances that may cause cancer:
    1. Diethanolamine
    2. Lead
    3. Artificial colors
    4. Hair dyes
    5. Lanolin
    6. talc
    7. Silica
    8. Formaldehyde
    9. Hydroquinone
    10. Parabens

Always ensure you are ware of all the ingredients found within the products you are using in order to prevent such mishaps.

Minimize the Risk

  • Read the instructions on the package of every cosmetic product.
  • Do not use it directly on a large surface of the skin. Do a testing in a small portion of your body and see if there is any reaction. If you feel uncomfortable, do not use it.
  • Skin care products should be placed in a cool place around 30 degrees Celsius; keep it away from direct exposure to sunlight.
  • Do not share cosmetics with others. They may have skin disorders which you may pick up.
  • Wash your hands before using any product. Always do this to avoid direct contact with dirt to any part of your body, especially your face.
  • Do not spray perfumes directly onto your body, spray at least 12 inches apart from it or onto your clothes.
  • Place cosmetic products where it cannot be reached by children.
  • Stay away from a burning flame when spraying as this will prevent the danger of fire.
  • Use with moderation. Do not use cosmetics if not needed. Apply only if necessary and according to the recommendations given by your dermatologist or package instructions.
  • Consult an expert, especially a dermatologist. The use of proper skin care products will vary on their recommendations.
