Cushion Cut Diamond, The Cut With the Brightest Shine

The name cushion just comes from the cushion shape, that can be rectangular or square in addition it will have rounded corners and curved edges to form that cushion shape.

Just like the world keeps changing especially technology wise, so do even names advance as well as products and shapes of diamonds! The now cushion cut diamonds were previously known as old mine cut, a timeless cut that has been in existence for around 200 years. Its existence was marked by a vast popularity for its shape until the cushion cut diamond came around the twentieth century, when it became the prevalent shape.

This cushion cut diamond has an ancient design and a modern design; the reinventing never stops. The ancient design returns light in a chunkier way than the twenty first century cut which was initiated by Marcel Tolkowsky. The modification involved enlarging the table, shrinking the culet, and improved angle cutting. These adjustments brought modernity and brilliance to the cushion cut diamond.  The traditional and modern cuttings are both used today to complement each other depending on what the buyer wants to have as the final piece of the cushion cut diamond. 

Why go for the cushion cut diamond? There are varied shapes existing from round, squares, rectangles, heart shaped but the cushion-cut diamonds stand out because of their enhanced fire which makes them enticing. Below are some cushion cut pavilion diamond patterns. The third one is referred to by GIA as modified cushion cut and gravitates to have a needle like or crushed ice pattern. You can see in the pictures below that one cushion cut diamond has the more fire effect because of the large facets while one has the crashed ice effect which will display a pin kind of fire.

The original cut cushion diamond shape was a square pillow although today even rectangular ones are available. Depending on your personal preference you will select the pattern that best appeals to you. The distinguishing factors among the different cushion cut diamonds depend on the steepness of the crown , size of the culets , the size of the table, shape you prefer and colour .
