Engineering skills are readily transferable from one industry to another and the demand for engineers in the country is high. Several engineering colleges have different components to determine the eligibility of candidates for admission. Engineering aspirants must have awareness of the admission process and criteria of engineering institutes in 2020.

Acceptability of Engineering Entrance Exam Score - India has a great number of engineering colleges, the major difference between them about the engineering admission process, is the acceptability of entrance test score. Not every engineering college in India accept the score of a common engineering entrance exam for admissions. The acceptability of entrance test score based on college and state. JEE Main is the widely accepted entrance test which most of the engineering colleges in India accept for engineering admissions. Apart from JEE Main, state-level engineering entrance exams are also held for students, which are confined to a specific state.

Multiple Engineering Entrance Exams and Score Acceptability - In some states, both national-level and state-level engineering entrance test is acceptable for admissions. For instance, B.tech admissions in Maharashtra are based on JEE Main/ MHT CET. In Himachal Pradesh, 15% of seats are reserved for students with JEE Main score. On the other hand, the Himachal Pradesh government also conducts a state-level engineering entrance exam to fill 85% of engineering seats under state quota.

Direct Admission without Entrance - Most of the private engineering colleges offer a chance for getting direct admission without an entrance test. Such admissions will be treated as management quota admissions, and the fees collected for management quota admissions are higher than entrance-based admissions.

Centralized Admission Process without Entrance - In some states, there is no entrance exam for engineering courses, and the admission is purely based on Class 12 merit. In those states, the centralized admission process is conducted for UG engineering courses. For example, Anna University in Tamil Nadu conducts a centralized admission process, i.e., Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions for UG engineering courses. All students in the state must participate in TNEA to secure a seat under state or concession quota.

Some more important criteria for engineering institute admission in 2020 are:

Make Deposits - After clearing the entrance exam, you must be able to make deposits to the college to make sure to have enough room for all the students who plan on coming to campus, many colleges ask students to make a portion of fees to be deposit to the school once they have been admitted. This may seem like a small thing, but in many engineering colleges suddenly, there wouldn’t be enough beds for students living on campus or enough classes for students. That’s why they need to confirm you are coming.

Orientation and Registration - Every engineering college has its own rules regarding orientation and registration. It is communicated to you with your letter of admission or through an email. You must go through it carefully. Some colleges consider your application complete only if you attend their orientation program and register for the classes. Some colleges offer students the chance to register for classes online instead of an orientation program before you get to campus. Fail to attend classes by a particular date, asked by the college, can reflect that you are not joining the campus further.
