diversity and complexity. The scripts of Arabic calligraphy can be
divided into two families, the rectilinear scripts and the round or

Arabic Calligraphy-an Art Form
Though
Arabic calligraphy is made with elegance, it can be decorated and
enhanced in many ways. The words are written in various colors or in
gold with a background of a contrasting color so that the words stand
out. Sometimes the letters are outlined and projected on a patterned
background. At times there is a combination of different sizes, colors
and styles used by the calligraphers. But one distinct feature is that
the clarity of the text is not overshadowed by the decorated frames or
background. The calligraphers have used their imagination and creativity
that has taken this form of writing beyond the pen and paper stage and
used other materials too like writing or painting on Ceramics, Stain
glass, Wood, Textiles and even metals. Though it is a form of decorative
art but at the same time it provides information about the decorated
object like the name of its maker, its use and also the date and place
of manufacture. Although calligraphic writings and paintings seem to be
quite uncomplicated, each letter, line or mark is the result of enormous
precision and hard work.
