Cosmetology Schools Fulfilling Student Dreams

by Kevin Smith Author

If you look around your community, you’ll no doubt see a lot of places to get your hair cut or styled. You’ll also see many places to have your nails done, or some other service performed. It’s big business and each one of them is staffed with professionals who graduated from a cosmetology school somewhere. In fact, some may have even attended a cosmetology hair school in Orlando, FL.

Employment Outlook

The Bureau of labor Statistics estimates that the overall employment of barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 10 percent between 2016 to 2026. That growth rate is faster than the average for all other professions. Demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments has risen in recent years, and it’s a trend that is expected to continue during the coming decade or so, maybe even longer.

Is Cosmetology School for You?

If you’re just entering the workforce, or you’ve been working for several years and would like to make a change, any cosmetology school would welcome you. Once there, you’re going to learn about a wide variety of services cosmetologists perform. For instance:

Cosmetology schools typically offer programs in hair, nails, makeup, beauty, and more. Consider learning, not just about cosmetology, but nail technology, skin care, massage therapy, and electrology, among others. Imagine having a career as a hairdresser, hairstylist, cosmetologist, manicurist and pedicurist, or skin care specialist. The job opportunities are endless. You could work in someone else’s salon, or eventually open your own. You might even be interested in working in the theatrical arts, doing make-up and hair, etc.

Finding the Right School

  • When looking for a cosmetology school, look for one that has programs where you’re allowed to get hands-on experience for your specific craft.
  • It might also be a plus if they offered programs and weekend or night classes for students, meaning that the schools’ curriculum is designed to fit the student’s schedule.
  • Are they an accredited school? This is something very important because accreditation is a process many schools go through in order to build a valid, credible reputation among fellow institutions, students and the public. Accredited schools are held to strict standards and must maintain those standards with each renewal. One bonus: Accredited schools are usually thought of more highly than those that aren’t.
  • Is the school in good standing with the state and local authorities? Make sure they are licensed and find out if they accept financial aid and, if so, has someone on staff to help you with that process.
  • Ask if the school has job placement opportunities. This is important to help secure work right out of school, or maybe even before graduation.
  • Take a tour of the campus before enrolling. This will give you a sense of what it’s like and you may even get a chance to talk to some current students about their experiences with the school.

So, as you search for a cosmetology hair school in Orlando, FL, know that most schools offer much more than just learning to cut, color or style someone’s hair. You’ve got an exciting and diverse career ahead of you.
