Concrete waterproofing – Types, Steps, and Advantages

Several studies have been undertaken to produce waterproofing additives that extend the service life of concrete elements. Consequently, a great deal of repair and maintenance costs could be avoided.

This paper aims to review the studies that have used various agents and tests to evaluate concrete waterproofing efficiency. The study establishes the taxonomy and constructs of research in concrete waterproofing research. The Study established frequency aggregation of the different additives used and tests applied. The technique adopted by the majority of the researchers was the use of the surface coating. Waterproofing solutions in Delhi absorption was found to be the most common test in this research area. The study delineated that most researchers focused on the use of polymer-based materials, silicates containing compound, silanes, siloxanes, cementing materials and some nano materials. Finally, the study established three classifications of additives based on material structure, method of application and additives functions.

The water and other fluid permeability in concrete can result in degradation, thus reducing the service life's concrete structures. Currently, various studies have been conducted in order to produce and test waterproofing additives to increase these elements service life. In this way the repair and maintenance costs of concrete structures could be avoided.

To evaluate the crystalline water leakage solutions in Delhi efficiency, the most commonly used tests are those which measure water absorption and chloride penetration. The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of a crystalline waterproofing, as coating and as admixture, comparing their performance with other concretes with or without silica fume admixture.

When surfaces are exposed to external environmental agents, the complex network of pores and capillaries that exists in dried cementations materials allows for the ingress of potentially dangerous substances, leading to deterioration and affecting long-term performance durability. The ingress of water, as a vehicle for all the harmful substances, is the main cause of all the major physical and chemical degradation processes affecting concrete structures, hence the research on protective treatments of cement-based structures is extensive.

The hydrophobic treatment methods for concrete involve the decrease in the water/cement ratio (w/c ratio), the use of controlled permeability formworks, the incorporation of water proof agents, and the surface treatments, including surface coating, hydrophobic impregnation, pore blocking surface treatment, and multifunctional surface treatments.
