Complications and Prevention of Diabetes

by Anika Dixit Blogger

Diabetes is a chronic health condition which means it's a long lasting health condition that a human develops. It affects how the body turns food into energy.

The body breaks down the food that humans eat into glucose/sugar and releases it into the stream of blood. When the level of blood sugar goes up, it signals the pancreas of the body to give out insulin. Insulin is a hormone that acts like a key to let the blood sugar into the body's cells as energy.

If you are having diabetes then your body doesn’t make enough insulin. When there isn’t enough of the hormone or cells stop responding to insulin, too much sugar stays in your bloodstream.

Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, loss of vision, and kidney disease. You need not worry as there are effective diabetes treatments in Kolkata to help you keep your diabetes in control.

You may hear doctors ask about two types of diabetes complications that are serious ones that build up over time called chronic complications and ones that can happen at any time called acute complications.

Chronic Complications

Chronic complications develop over time and can give rise to serious issues like:

  1. Eye problems

People with diabetes develop an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy that affects their eyesight and can also cause permanent loss of eyesight.

  1. Heart attack and stroke

If you are diabetic then high blood sugar for a period of time could cause serious damage to your blood vessels. This can also lead to heart attacks and strokes.

  1. Kidney problems

Chronic Diabetes attacks the kidneys over a long period of time making it harder to clear extra fluid and waste from your body.

Acute Complications

Acute Diabetes happens any time and leads to chronic complications if not treated.

  1. Hypos occur when the blood sugars level is too low.

  1. Hypers occur when the blood sugars level is too high.

  1. Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State is a life-threatening emergency that occurs only in people with type 2 diabetes. It’s caused by severe dehydration and very high blood sugars.

How to prevent the complications

  • Eat healthy foods: Eat foods that have less fat content and calories and are higher in fibre. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

  • Get into regular physical activity: Work out for at least 30 minutes. Try moderate aerobic activity on most days of the week. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week.

  • Lose excess pounds: Incase if you are overweight, lose 7% of your body weight, it reduces the risk of diabetes. But don't try to lose weight during pregnancy.

Conclusion

Be it acute or chronic or mildest of diabetes, talk through your worries and concerns to the specialist for accurate information and diabetes treatment in Kolkata. You will be given as much time as you need.

It will be fruitful if the treatments start as soon as the diabetic condition is diagnosed. Keep a check in the regular medicines, food intakes, things to be avoided and regular exercise. These may not completely cure but it can definitely keep diabetes in control.
