Image Exhaust system is a vital part of the car and performs a range of functions from noise reduction and directing the fumes away from the passengers to improving fuel consumption and engine performance. But like most other vehicle parts, car exhaust system too faces a number of problems that affect the overall performance of the vehicle. Exhaust problems if left untreated can also affect the safety of the driver and the passenger. It is therefore necessary to spot these problems and get them fixed before it is too late.

Rust is the biggest enemy of exhaust systems. Though aluminized steel and stainless steel is being used widely in the production of exhaust system parts, rust is still the major cause of most exhaust system problems. Rust causes problems to the car exhaust system not only in cold weather climates, but also in normal conditions. Frequent short trips allow water vapour to collect in the exhaust system which doesn’t allow it to get hot enough to burn it off. This results in condensation and formation of rust.

Another common problem with the exhausts system is holes in mufflers, pipes, resonators, and catalytic converters from the outside. This happens mainly due to the accumulation of rain, snow, and salt and road crud. It also corrodes flanges, connectors, and heat shields.

Yet another danger to the car exhaust system is the clogging of the catalytic converter. There is an oxygen sensor mounted in the exhaust system. When this sensor goes bad, the engine computer is unable to balance the air-fuel mixture for optimum performance, emissions, and fuel economy. The computer calls for a mix that is very high on gas and low on air. Such a hot blend often ends up clogging the catalytic converter. Misfiring spark plugs, oil or antifreeze in the exhaust system, and wayward ignition timing can also damage the catalytic converter.

Car exhaust problems are thankfully easy to spot. Listen out to any unusual noises while driving. If your car makes a roaring noise, it is probably due to the corrosion of the silencer. A rattling sound from underneath the car means that the car exhaust system has become probably misaligned. A loud metallic sounding vibration means that something is touching the exhaust pipe or that the clamp or pipe has become way too loose.

You must also carry visual checks to spot potential issues with your car exhaust system. Look for rusting, cracks, or any holes around the joints and seams. Get your vehicle checked from a trained professional at regular intervals to ensure that everything is fine and your vehicle is safe to drive.
