Commerce Education: Forwarding Education In Commerce For Better Jobs Opportunities

Most of the seats remained vacant or were taken up by those students, who considered pursuing business in future. Perception was that these courses were required to assist people in carrying out and handling trade, commerce and industry. As a reiteration of this conceptual thought process, many famous personalities in industrial sectors in India are seen having commerce degrees at bachelor and post graduation levels. But the present scenario has really split the commerce education in India because of the arrival of specialised fields such as chartered accountancy, cost and works accountancy, company secretary, business administrator, and the likes. Present, commerce education has remained as a topic to be studied in the graduation and 12th standards, without any real application of the subject on the whole.
 
•    Specialised diversification – Such a trend of diversification of commerce has been natural progression of course breakup, seen in most of other streams. Courses like MBA, engineering, etc have been divided into specialisation, which is a great hit among students. According to their perspective, the earlier a specialisation is done greater would be the knowledge in particular field. This will allow people to secure jobs from an earlier stage and this will also give them an opportunity to pursue further related specialisations in their own way.
 
•    Lack of attention – In recent years, commerce education has taken a back seat because of many factors. It is not entirely dependent on student factors but is a summation of different reasons related to colleges, students and the administration. Students want to enter into medical and engineering courses, more than they wish to go for commerce. Even if candidates are not able to secure direct medical or engineering seats, they try to get into allied subjects such as pharmacy, hospital administration, and other such courses or into architecture and MCA courses. Only when people fail to get into these courses also, or they do not want to move out of their comfort zone for these courses, they try and settle down for commerce courses at bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the local facilities.
 
Commerce graduates are not open to many competitive examinations such as teacher training courses. Also, in banking and professional courses like CA, CWA, CS, MBA, etc, there are no specific reservations or special concessions given to the commerce graduates. Poor teaching standards in colleges due to suitably qualified teacher and the higher student teacher ratio in colleges, are forcing people to think of other alternatives. Private education providers are not very enthusiastic about commerce education system, and they concentrate more on profit building measures and so promote such specialised courses.
 
Defective admission policies and step fatherly attitude of the governments towards colleges providing commerce education is a big deterrent for many students. There are plenty of other issues plaguing the commerce education in India present. To raise the bar of commerce education, sufficient amount of issues are required to be submitted for improving the standard of education. Starting from encouraging students to the giving of incentives to them, through reservations, more job opportunities and integrated courses can bring an inflow of students in large numbers, into the commerce colleges and seats in the country.
